Mental illness runs in my family... schitzophrenia, drug abuse, alcoholism, addiction, suicide, ODs, etc.

my mom was paranoid schitzophrenic... I've heard it can be hereditary, and while in men it sets in during your early 20s, for women its their mid 20s or later...
sometimes I honestly feel like I'm losing my mind. In high school I told my psychiatrist, psychologist, therapist, and social worker all that I thought I was losing my mind... they all laughed it off and said I'm just stressed.
but I'm 22 now, and I can't drive because I'm so distracted I nearly cause car accidents. I feel stupid a lot. I find I start imagining things and mumbling to myself, and I have to catch myself. I overreact emotionally and freak out a lot.
I'm not terribly worried about it, just curious....

I wouldn't worry about it to much at the moment. A lot of people are bad drivers and lack focus, a lot of people daydream, getting lost in their imaginations. A lot of people stress out about things. It probably is inherited behaviour, wheather that be genetic or upbringing environment I don't know. Eccentric people are more interesting anyway.

Well if you suddenly start hearing voices that order you to kill others; you might just be a paranoid schizophrenic

i would see a doctor about it. if you are going through the onset of schitzophrenia, its better to find out now then when you have a full blown case of it.

I'd say if you can't drive because you are experiencing such "disorganized thoughts" (symptom of schizophrenia) then that is something to look into. Not being able to drive is a pretty serious impairment to your life, I'm not even sure why you are starting a thread on the internet about this and not seeing a professional. also being overly emotional and overreacting a lot and talking to yourself are also all very common symptoms. Your call man.

You should definitely see a doctor if you think you might be showing symptoms. At the very least, my advice to you is to never touch cannabis, lsd, mushrooms, etc as they can cause those with latent schizophrenia to have a full outbreak.

if you think you're going crazy, it's a sign of sanity. you should only start worrying when you think you're getting saner. Also, not counting the family history and the fact that I don't drive, I have all the same symptoms.

it's okay to be crazy. I think we'll have a lot to discuss lol.

do you hallucinate when you imagine things or are you just imagining things... I imagine things and talk to myself all the time and it's human... not schizophrenia

what specifically distracts you when I drive... if it's the radio and cell phone that's average too

I would see a doctor if you're really concerned but these don't seem like symptoms of schizophrenia unless you could be more specific

You must be stay sober and live an active lifestyle outside of a bedroom to understand if you have anything.

Do you have a hard time staying away from any substances? If so that is the first thing you need to get away from, regardless of what it is.

Even if you are, so what? There is NOTHING wrong with being schizophrenic. You can lead a healthy life exactly the way you want to live it.

It's not about whether or not it's "wrong", it's about treating symptoms that interfere with his life. Like not being able to drive a car because he can't focus for 5 seconds past the tidal wave of thoughts besieging him.

she should definitely see someone and perhaps even prior to going to a doctor, have an in depth discussion with her mother to see if her mom experiences similar symptoms and how to overcome/deal with them.

You most definitely do not HAVE to drive a car. We made it several tens of thousands of years just fine without vehicles.

I'm 23 and I've never driven a car and have absolutely no intention to either.

Be careful with the psychedelics, particularly cannabis.
You probably have a powerful imagination and don't need them anyway =)

Medication can make a world of difference when you have symptoms.

Could be one of many things. Could be schizophrenia. Could be nothing. First port of call = GP. You're not losing your mind though.

Personally I couldn’t imagine a life without a car

Sure I could use public transportation, take a taxi, or call a friend or a relative to pick me up but life wouldn’t be worth living without a set of wheels :(
