I live in an alternative communty/intentional community. For some it would probably be a boring place. It is in many ways a challenging place. There is water, and a few sites that are on the grid. A majority of the sites are off the grid. I wish I would have come out here when I was younger, and had more energy to build, but most think I have done a LOT. The advantages of living here, are no real building codes are enforced, no resources, so little growth in this area, it is the cheapest place in the USA I have ever seen. This community also is not very cohesive, so you can do just about whatever you want....ie...no mandatory work times etc. You can either be social, or reclusive. The drawbacks are that there is no jobs so if you want to live here you have to generate your own money by selling on ebay or whatever. There are a lot of Mexicans in this area, and some retired people, and a few others. It is close to Mexico, where you can buy papayas year round. The Mexico crossing is pretty mellow, I go down about once a week, and have always felt safe. You could possibly work in construction(personal), house cleaning, caring for elderly, general maintenance, because there is also a lack of help. You could bid jobs, or the average pay is about $10hr. The thing is it only costs about $1500 to get a lot, $20 a month maintenance for roads water etc. and my taxes average about $20 a year TRUE ! Sometimes in the summer with gardens my water will be as high as $100...but usually less...an average of about $20 for most people. No big time shopping here. Small time, and a little more ie hardware walmart, health food abotu 30 min away.....with big time shopping 1 1/2 hr away. Most here now are retired or semi retired, and keep to themselves. The population of this community has gone down due to death and a few leaving. But if you want a cheap, building code free place to settle or just have fun building, one that is cheap enough you could still travel....this is it.
