    Heya all,

After reading some of the posts here, I figured I would share my story and how I avoided getting busted.

I was driving out to the east coast from Minnesota, on I-94 in Wisconsin going about 80. I was moving to a new town, so I had stocked up before I left (little less than an oz) and had been smoking every few hours on the drive. I was just deciding it might be time to pack another when I noticed that the car I'm passing on the right had a bunch of antennas on the trunk, which immediately made me think undercover cop car.

Sure enough, as soon as I get passed him (slowing down from 80 but still goin at least 77) he pulls into the left lane and turns on his lights. I start swearing and start to pull over, all while trying to make sure everyone is out of sight. I come to a stop, the cop comes out and tells me that he was traveling 65 and I was "flying" past him so I had to be going pretty fast, gets my license/registration, and asks me where I'm coming from and going. I answer and he goes back to his car.

The cop then gets back out, comes back to my car, bends over to get a good look at my eyes, and asks me if I'm wearing corrective lenses. I tell him I'm wearing contacts and he says "Ok, just wanted to make sure" and goes back to his car. At this point, I notice in the rear-view mirror that my eyes are really red. Now my eyes *always* get really red whenever I smoke, so I usually put Visine whenever I'm going to be in public. I had put Visine in earlier that day, but it wasn't working for some reason. So now I'm starting to sweat a bit, as the cop had been in his car for a good 7-8 minutes at this point. Then, another cop pulls up behind the first one. Now I'm shitting bricks as I know cops don't call for backup for a speeding ticket. The new cop gets out and comes up to my car and starts asking me if I have weapons, illegal drugs, or anything else he should know about. I keep saying "No, no, no" to everything and he goes back to his car.

Both cops hang out in their cars for a while, and I can see them talking to each other over the radio. After another 10 minutes (I had been pulled over for about 25 minutes at this point), both cops get out. The first cop starts walking towards the driver side, while the other cop is walking up the passenger side. The first cop hands me back my license, and then asks if I would get out of the car and step to the back for a minute. I say "sure", while thinking to myself "fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck". Before actually getting out, I rolled up my driver side window all the way, turned off my car and took the keys out of the ignition. Then I stepped out of the car, locked my doors, and shut the door behind me.

So now I step back towards where the first cop was standing, and he starts asking me a bunch of questions about why my eyes look so red, if I had been smoking anything, if there was anything in the car he should know about. I keep saying no to everything, and see in the corner of my eye that the 2nd cop is looking through all of my car windows. He got to the drivers side and then I heard him actually *try the locked door to my car*. At this point, the first cop is asking me repeatedly "If I bring a K-9 unit out here, hes not going to indicate on your car is he?". I keep saying no, and then he asks "So you wouldn't mind if I searched your car then right?"

At this point, I think I am completely fucked. However, I told him that no, I didn't want him to search my car and that I really needed to be getting going. He stares me down for another 10 seconds or so, and then hands me back my registration, my warning(!!!) for speeding, and told me to get out of there. I get into my car, start it up and drive away scot-free, without even getting a ticket for speeding. Needless to say, I drove the speed limit for the rest of my trip heh.

If this is all tldr for you, here's how you can avoid going to jail even if the cops know you are high.

-Always deny you have anything illegal in the car. Don't do their job for them.

-Roll up your windows and LOCK your car if a cop ever asks you to get out of the car. This ensures the cop will have to ask your permission before doing a search of your car. If he asks why you locked your doors, just say its force of habit and that you always do it.

-Never allow them to search your car. Cops need your permission to search you or your car, unless they actually see pot (or can smell it if you've been smoking). Don't give it to them.

-Don't let them break you. Cops know they are intimidating (especially to a guilty person), and they will use it to try and get you to admit you have illegal stuff in the car. Always say "No", even if they imply they will go easy on you if you just admit it to them. Be firm and don't crack.

Holy shit, this turned out longer than I thought it would be, but oh well. Thanks fer readin if ya got this far, and stay safe :)

Yeah man, good stuff. A similar situation happened to me when I was driving in North Carolina once coming over from college in Tennessee to go meet my dad. To make a very long story short they asked me the same questions, however I actually really didn't have anything in the car w/ me so I said they could go ahead & search the car. The funny thing was when I was standing w/ 1 cop while the other was w/ the dog I noticed my tags were expired & the cop goes "Hey, your tags were up last month." & I go, "Oh, no, in Ohio it's different. That's actually the month they issue the tags to you. I just got 'em last month." So the stupid redneck cop just goes "Oh, okay." & that was that. However, after after I told my Dad the whole story he told me to never consent to a search b/c cops, especially in middle of nowhere North Carolina, could plant shit in your car & fuck you over big time & its obviously their word against yours when you're standing in front of the judge. So yeah, good job not allowing them to search your car & also playing it cool & not being a dick. That's where I feel people get in trouble is when they get an attitude w/ the cop, as was the case for a few of my friends.

This is so true. If you start being a wiseass and confrontational about your rights with a cop they will find a way to search you and fuck you over. Don't consent to a search but be friendly and low key about it, and good jod by the op on closeing windows and locking doors.
