got a free box of heirloom seed varieties and yesterday i sorted through them - seems i'm most interested in growing and storing winter staples . dry beans , squash and amaranth . now , i'm a lazy native farmer and i think these are the easiest to grow and harvest . i'd rather be out traveling long and hard , but its the amaranth that will hang me up . it needs a wet spring start to produce well and then is 60 days to maturity and must be harvested exactly then and so or the birds eat it . it takes 20 days just to get the whole garden birthed and mulched . i guess i get 40 days in the wilderness and all winter to get fat .
