. It would seem to me that alcoholics lose their perspective on life. They tend to regurgitate dogma rather than think for themselves. EDIT: Alcoholics consider themselves as experts and know better than anyone else.
Metaphorically, you might agree, the connection to the 'Spirit' is entrapment, per se. Perhaps Zardoz, trained to kill from youth and finding himself amongst bored immortals would come to perceive the threads of manipulation.
