If I could only keep one of the modern British fantasy authors, it would have to be Alan Garner over Lewis, Rowling, Pullman, Cooper and even Tolkien. I was first enthralled by The Weirdstone of Brisingamen as a schoolboy perhaps 40 years ago, and I find something new every time I return to his books. Today I bought the Stone Book Quartet which I've somehow missed out on up to now. Although the Owl Service and Red Shift were successfully televised and Weirdstone was made into a radio drama, I don't think any movies have yet been made from his books. Perhaps we should be thankful for that ...
