Where do African Americans stand generally on LGBT issues?

I know anecdotally, the evidence points a number of ways. I did once hear they are less likely to support gay marriage. But this was a while ago. And at one time, let's face it, almost everyone was against gay marriage. (Hillary Clinton for example was against marriage for gays, but in favor of civil unions. You can see the confusion this can cause.)

So what do the polls and statistics say? I'd (and probably a lot of other people) would really like to know.

This excerpt is from a soc text. It doesn't mention African Americans but talks about other factors that typically influence heterosexism.

    I don't like this question.

    It seems racist.

Why would you assume that African Americans need to be singled out for thinking differently than any of the rest of the people in America?

I don't think that is necessarily true:smiley:. African Americans do belong to a different culture than the rest of the country. And they themselves would be the first to admit it, too.

On a slightly different tangent, but also a good point ,there are people who claim there is no such thing as race. But when asked on the census form, which race you think you belong to, many people proudly mark the box, whether it is Hispanic, Asia, African American or whatever. It's not racist. As I said, in some cases, it is a matter of pride even:smiley:.

All that may be true but still, my gut doesn't like it.

Also, at the Gay Pride Parades in Atlanta, African American participants were as proud as anyone else.

He's just asking what the statistics say. Some groups, as a whole, tend to have different beliefs and values than other groups for a number of reasons. Obviously doesn't mean anything in terms of individuals, but it can be helpful to know which groups generally lean a certain way.

Don't presume my thoughts are in alignment with others who share a similar skin color.

    When did I do that?

Like I said - statistics/trends mean nothing to the individual.

No, I didn't mean you specifically.

I hope that no one would presume that.

I see that the op said where do African Americans stand and what do polls say.

A stand is an attitude, stance, point of view, viewpoint, opinion, way of thinking, outlook, standpoint, position, approach, thinking, policy, line...

To poll is to canvass, survey, ask, question, interview, ballot...

I just think that isn't a clear picture unless you poll every African American and they truthfully answer a poll.

    I realize I'm nit-picking but...

I have just wondered it for some time now. I grew up around and live with many African Americans and just wondered what they thought about the subject matter.

I'd go with thinking it depends on the individual just like everything does.
