i'm 20 years old and have no clue what to do with my life. i'm in my second year at acradia university, but i wanna get out of here. go up north to vermont. i thought about being a history teacher, but i don't think i could do that for the rest of my life. now i'm looking into sociology and anthropology. i don't want to be a social worker or anything like that. i thought about enviornmental studies, but i'm not good with science. i was debating takin sum time off of school and working and then heading out on the road. just travel the country and then go back to school, but i fear i my never go back. i often as why am i in school? i have no answer except i want to be able to support a family and travel with me children (when i have them), sumthing my parents weren't able to do. i want them to see the world...at least more that i have. i guess i just needed to vent. any advice at all would be wonderful. thanks for listening. have yourselves a great day!!!
People always get stuck in this idea that you have to do one thing for the rest of your life. There is no reason why you can't go to school and become a history major, teach for five or six years, then go back to school and become something else you are interested in.
just go with the flow... if college isn't your thing right now, then try something else. just be careful and don't end up homeless. besides, you can always attend college later if that is what you wish.
I'm in the same boat as you right now. I'm a junior, and I've changed my major several times. Right now I'm studying media production. This isn't what I see myself doing for the rest of my life, but I'm going to stick with it just so I can graduate, have a degree and be done with college. Personally, I just want to travel around for the rest of my life (at least for a while). I don't want to have a conventional job at all, and I don't see myself in one career for the rest of my life. The only reason I'm completeing college now is so I can put "college graduate" on my resume should I ever need it. My advice to you is, if you can complete college with financial ease, then go ahead and get it over with. Pick a major that interests you, whether you could see it as a career or not. Take a wide range of courses to learn more about what you like and don't like. That way, when you're done, you will have learned about yourself, and perhaps even met people who could help you out later. More importantly, you'll have a degree that you can use should you need it. If you get out of school now, I think it will be harder to go back than you think.
i know i don't have to do one thing forever, but it seems that way. they let you think that way. it's sooo stressful to be in school. but thank you all for the advice. it's good to know other people are in the same boat.
Just because you have a degree in a certain topic, doesn't mean you will work in that field. I have a history degree and I have worked in the field before, but I currently work for a non-profit to benefit low income kids. I couldn't have gotten this job without a college degree, they just didn't care what the subject was. But there are some really cool things you can do with a history degree (BA or education based). The National Park Service has some great, good paying jobs related to lots of historical topics. State parks are also a place to look. I worked in a park before and I think I will probably do it again some day. It was a lot of fun and I was able to spend time outside and in the archives. Just a thought.
