so how do some of you get into carectar? ( no idea how to spell that) i find that its really fun to stay in chactar for a few days at a time and just mess with every one. about a week a ago i was a russion grandma that was gay for about 3 days. so fun arnar
it just happens. I get better just from watching people, so even at auditions for a school play I'll pretend that I'm in Johnny Depp's shoes and read from the script, or do improvisations. you just gotta be the person whom you're playing. teleport yourself to another world and into the body of the character. i take art pretty seriously.
i just do, if i could explain it i'd write a book and make millions cause then everyone could act. EDIT~ok not EVERYone, but alot more of the people who think they can act would actually be able to
Just have fun with it - relax and forget the self-consciousness - just do it. I have a friend who was playing an extremely emotive but mute character - that was interesting, he was "Dave" for a whole week and by the end of it you had conversations with him without noticing that he hasn't said a word. Blessings Sebbi
when i go to auditions i would much rather do a cold read.. just give me 5 minutes to look over the lines and it goes pretty well.
acting is not easy for everyone. getting into character easily is a skill, a train of though. lots of people can do it, but lots more cant. most of the people who can, dont, and many never bother. youre 15. chances are youre performing with similarly less experienced people. your director should be going through stanislavski stuff, character exercises. you gotta think of it as a real person (assuming youre doing a character, and not an expressionistic role or something), in a real world. however, its not YOUR world. you need to make your world the characters world, not try to fit the character into your own world (which is as an actor on a stage)
there's a lot of different methods..what makes a 'good' actor is supposedly determinded my Goethes principles, though I don't agree with all. For me I read the script a lot and think about my character and her emotions..in rehearsals we do a lot of improv in your character. Also, I enjoy method acting..and always before shows we are supposed to be in character 2 hours before curtain, sometimes it's even the whole day, just whatever works for you.. the most important thing is to UNDERSTAND who they are, you can't act the part if you don't know your character, fictional or not..best of luck
I agree with pretending to be the character. For the song telephone hour, in Bye Bye Birdie, we were told that when ever we were on the phone, to act as obnoxious as possible, and it really helped to get the feel of the song. If there's a movie version, I like to watch it...but sometimes its more fun to watch it afterward, to see how unique you were. haha...just have fun with it.
The thing that you should work on is really learning to just LET GO..it also baffled and frustrated me when people would hold back in their character because they were 'shy'..the character ISN'T you, so go for it. Make a whole life for your role, even if you have 2 lines, and then you can really run with it.
