I've only played around with acrylic paints and before I went out to purchase all the necessary items For oil painting, I wondered if anyone could tell me which they like better and why?
Acrylics are easier, as they dry quicker....overnight....and your brushes can be washed with water....They seem to have more psychedelic vibrant colors in acrylics..... Oils are more velvety and the colors are a little more subdued and classic,...however, you can mix colors to make other colors with either, too. With oils, you need paint thinners and cleaners, and your painting could take up to two weeks to dry, considering the thickness of your painting and your brush strokes. Oils are more expensive to use. Both are good. I use both...as well as watercolors.
Up until my recent class in basic design(Art minor/freshmen) I hated acrylic with a passion because I just can't get the blend that I like oils but i use acry-oils (water soluble oil paint.) I appreciate how fast acrylic is(last minute projects) but I feel like I dont commit as much to my work when its acrylic. I LOVE th Acry-oils and they will dry in about 3-5 days! They are beautiful!
Oh thank you!! You've both given me some great well rounded thoughts to think on!!! I think I'll try those acry-oils. Seems like the best if both worlds... My style all around. Thanks again!!!
Oils oils oils. They're in line with nature, they will disintegrate eventually and cause minimal harm to the environment whereas with acrylic it's only a matter of time before it kills something or ends up polluting more of the ocean. Besides that they're richer, more vibrant, smell better, your work looks more natural and organic since the way you paint with them isn't as layered and "mechanical" as acrylics..
this! oils are beautiful, but temperamental, difficult to work with, and take forever to dry, imho. i've only worked with them a bit though and don't really have any training in them. i was introduced to acrylics in the foster system by my adopted grandma; we'd get them donated and she had them in our collective art room. they're economical, bright, fun, forgiving, and quick drying. i used to be terrified of the permanency and unforgiving nature of watercolours, but now i love them!
I'm not really sure what to pick to be honestly cause I haven't painted yet and I'm not sure which one to purchase for myself yet. I think I'll probably buy Acrylics though. If people have a different opinion please let me know. Thank you!
Acrylics are probably your best "first choice"... While not being the same as... They can be thinned to work much like watercolor, or used straight out of the tube much like Oil. Faster dry times can make them much more forgiving than oils also. For the "purists" out there note I said "much like" and "not being the same as...", Okay?
