First of all, I ask this question in all seriousness. And you know, if you answer it for me, you're answering it for someone who doesn't have the courage to even ask it. Think of that.

Anyway, as I actually did bring up before, as I get older, I find I'm losing control of my number two function. (Okay, I'm 54, to save you the trouble of asking or speculating :) .) Actually the matter has resolved itself slightly recently. But the following question is still pertinent and important though.

What do I do if I lose control in public? I've asked people around me that. The usual response is to just make a quick break for the exit. IAE I am also curious about the next one: what would you do? I've always wanted to ask that realize.

Oh, and if you have number two control issues in public, I have to tell you. You'll pay money, or maybe your insurance will pay for your doctor. And he'll basically just tell you the same thing two doctors told my father and me. One tablespoon of Benefiber mixed in a glass of water each day. No, don't ask me to explain it.

Now my father swore it helped him. Me, perhaps my doctor didn't know he already had me on two fiber supplements. So it kind of had the unintended opposite effect on me. YMMV.

Thank you in advance for your helpful replies :) .

I think you need to find out what the cause is first.

I have IBS and never got quite so short .

I found taking calcium based indigestion tables has helped such as these below just before I go out

Bowel incontinence can be upsetting and hard to cope with, but treatment is effective and a cure is often possible, so make sure you see your GP. It's important to remember that: Bowel incontinence isn't something to be ashamed of – it's simply a medical problem that's no different from diabetes or asthma.

For me it’s more of a number one issue of sorts. I’m 47 and have a very long history of type one diabetes and sometimes my bladder just isn’t working as well as it used to.

Naturally I spend more of my day urinating than I used to and I have days where my bladder lets me know that he’s not feeling well and that I should take myself to the nearest toilet and sit down so he can relax and urinate rather than risk losing control.

The big problem is that I don’t drive and am regularly outside walking or waiting for the bus and especially during the winter months I suddenly feel the urgent need to urinate. When this happens I just try to find a private place where I can let myself go.

I can't believe these excretion issues are being discussed suddenly. But here's my advice if you can't hold your poo...

As we age we lose the ability to digest food as we did before. We have less good bacteria which means less enzymes available to process each meal. In addition we often pick up malign bacteria that can cause issues.

To restore proper bacteria in your intestines, yogurt or kefir taken daily can help a lot. To prevent killing off these good probiotics, don't drink alcohol.

I've found I get loose stools the day after consuming any alcohol, even a small glass of wine. I will wait a couple of hours, then have yogurt to restore my system.

With so many scientific studies now showing your gut bacteria can be responsible for everything from IBS to cancer, it's worth focusing on what you eat and drink and it's effect on your gut.

Prebiotics are also important. Those are things we eat that the probiotics like to feed on, such as fiber, especially from whole grains and beans.

You mentioned type 2 diabetes in other posts and that your A1C was climbing as well. I know that I have more issues when my blood sugar levels are higher than normal and I wonder if this is making things worse for you?

I see this OG post is pretty old, so not sure if the poster will even see this but here goes... First, I absolutely acknowledge that pee accidents are a WHOLE different level of awkward than #2. That said, and if it helps, I have visible leaks in public often. And have found that that confidence is key. The less nervous you act, the less the person is likely to mention it or care. Just a few days ago, I pee'd my pants walking back to my apartment from my car and when I got into the lobby, a neighbor was at the elevator. She said hi. I said hi back. We traded a few pleasantries and I continued my way up the stairs at a normal pace. I've had a #2 accident in public due to a stomach bug or IBS about three times and twice, anyone who noticed it, or anyone I had to ask for help, was nothing but nice, accommodating and reassuring about it. Either telling me something like, "It's happened to me too," or "Oh, yes, uhhh... There is a men's room right down the hall on the left." Nothing more. No snide or nervous tone in their voice. I even had a friend who pooped himself in an elevator with another person there. He smelled it but didn't realize it. And the other person just pointed down at his feet and said, "I think there's something on your shoe." The point being, I can't think of a time I had an accident or heard of someone having an accident in which other people were jerks or judgy about it. [Obviously excluding when it happens to a kid in front of other kids. Because, y'know, between 8 and 14, kids are devoting 60% of their brain power at any given moment to scan the room for an opportunity to make someone else so embarrassed they want to curl up into a ball and die. It's almost impressive how much of a super power it is.]
