I Xposted this in Beverages but figured I would get a few more replies here. WTF is the Beverages forum for anyway? LOL!

So, we bought this shit, TEMP3ST (SOUL) tonight. $31 for the bottle. It's technically "absinthe". I got a pic. Anyone tried it? We're 3 shots in (15 mins) and it feels pretty nice. We're mixing it with bud but can def. tell the abs is kicking in.

since none of the forums are busy anymore, most people just search new posts. thus, you'll get the same replies no matter where you post for the most part.

absinthe really doesn't do much beyond get you drunk. the hallucinogenic substances are there in pretty small doses.

Yeah, it gets you drunk like any other alcohol -- that's all. I hate the taste, though. For some reason there is this mystique behind absinthe that refuses to die. I don't get it.

Yeah, it's nasty. I think the mystique stems from the so-called hallucinations you can get. The prob with that is you have to drink a shit ton to get to that point, at least with the stuff sold here in Merica. I for one would rather drink lighter fluid than that stuff, and I have zero desire to drink lighter fluid.

The absinthe of old probably used to have a whole pot-load of "good stuff" that is filtered out now. From everything I've ever read about it, it used to could even kill you...and I'm not talking about alcohol poisoning.

Isn't it made from the plant artemsia, specifically "wormwood"?

ahhhh so, grasshopper...I see. :) No really, I have some wormwood in the yard, and after handling it, once I accidently tasted my fingers. It was a strange, bitter taste. And no, I didn't see anything (lol), but I did wonder how one would make absinthe. I find it very interesting it also has sage and fennel in it.

Very interesting on the lack of information on this thread. Not sure where you are all from, but wormwood levels are regulated depending on the country. As far as I know, the only civilized country you can get the full hallucinogenic stuff from would be Holland.
But to the current circumstance. You are not supposed to drink it straight. Your generally supposed to mix it with 2/3rds water and stir in a melted sugar cube per glass. In order to activate the thujone/wormwood. And you get used to the taste after a while
From my experiences, it is best to not drink other alcohol beforehand. Because you then just seem to get shit-faced.

You forgot the sweet flag, that can play a big part in the extra "buzz" people speak of. I have only experienced the true effects of strong absinthe when I distilled it myself using wormwood, mugwort, sweet flag, fennel, hyssop, mint, and star anise. It's a little hard to determine whether store-bought absinthe theses days is just a slightly different alcohol effect (many I know can't tell the difference). The stuff I distilled seemed to potentate the already strong alcohol about two fold. It also allowed me to think "beyond" the picture of every scene, and with the impression that I had a clear head doing so. Most clear headed intoxication I've experienced. It gave everything a dark and questionable feeling, but I wouldn't describe this as a "trip" or "high" as opposed to a view on the world. I also saw the creative potential. For example: I would picture everyday, boring, inanimate objects in new uses or like a morphed painting, hell I'd even wish for a lamp post to be a dragon in the corner and the coffee table a valiant knight defending us from it (didn't hallucinate this, just pictured it very vividly). I very much enjoy the drink and the feel, but unfortunately regulation of wormwood/thujone kind of dulls down its effects to just strong alcohol. I found my own brew particularly tasty (surprise!) when a drink and a half or so was mixed with a glass of water containing cool aid invisible. It reminded me of a more natural licorice flavour. Bottom line is: brew your own or go to a country with lax thujone regulation laws if you want to experience Wormwood. Some advice: Don't overdue it, just have a couple casual drinks and leave it at that.

Taste like black licorice and you shouldn't be taking shot or at least dilute it with a bit of water, any how it's a novelty drink - waste of good liquor money in IMO.

if you purchased it in a merican liquor store then you just have a bottle of high alcohol content. even some of the foreign stuff is kind of low on the thujone count.
i have had many different kinds and only when i drank the strongest ones did i experience anything more than an alcohol buzz. (seeing people on tv as cartoon characters) the problem is when i drink more that a few shots of absinthe it hurts my stomach. (even if its mixed with water) i enjoy it but i dont drink it expecting to hallucinate.
