I heard that its not illegal in the US anymore?! Since when? Im so effin oblivious lol Ive always wanted to drink it since I saw it in Dracula ..
I just looked it up on Wiki. and it says that it is legal now. It was made in California for the first time in Dec 2007 and since then other microbreweries have started making absinthe. I'd like to try it too... I wonder if it would taste shitty like other alcohol?
no shit? always wanted to try absinth----now i can thanks for the update--made from wormwood i believe--im going to order me some for christmas--and alcohol is an aquired taste---rare is the person who likes it at first---but my 18yo daughter loved tequila at first taste---ranting sorry--but POE and famous artists Van Goh(sp) lord byron alot of victorian arty types used it---might be overrated hell ive tried moonshine and 151 bacardi youkon jack i dont think it could be stronger but different? maybe like tequila which is a little psychedelic for me--only way is get some and give it a try--Peace
Yes, absinthe is now legal! You can find it at your local Bev Mo that's what I did. I got one last yr made w/southern wormwood called Absente as it was the cheapest at the time, but I recently bought one called Le Tourment Vert which is made w/grande wormwood which is what it's supposed to be made with. It tastes a bit like black licorice so if you like that you'll like absinthe. I don't really, but it tastes better if u add a bit more water & sugar though...
ouzo tastes just like black licorice and i liked that---how strong is absinthe? is it beer like or hard liquor like? basically what proof is it ?
It's hard liquor like not beer like. And it's high proof-it varies by brand though. LTV says 50% alc/vol.
I just looked it up and they have like 1000 varieties that you can order online.. I'm checking out some that won the Absinthiades you have to order from Europe and its like 70 USD+ but I think it's worth it, Absinthe is something you kind of have around for awhile.
wow--hard liqour like 50% is 100 proof---kinda scary for me theres been stories through the generations about absinthe---and i know i cant get drunk on tequila cas i might go crazy but whiskey is no problems for me---absinthe ill have a sitter for cas im going for stupor ive read where whole tables just stopped everybody quit eating talking pipes were smoking nobody was hitting them---these were the stories that made it--not a sociaty thing--but got it regulated to bohemians and he arty types--he drinks absinthe you know---lol
The bottle I have is 55% I think. I know it's more than 50%. I'm too lazy to go downstairs to check, lol. But it IS similar to Ouzo in taste. Whereas Ouzo is clear, Absinthe is light green. I just drink it neat, but I should try the sugar thing just so I could say I tried it, lol.
I know a Greek guy who loves Ouzo, I just heard about it the other day.. I dont really like the guy personally.. ... I do like some Greeks though
The reason it was banned in the US was because of the psychedelic effects thought to be in the chemcial Thujone (or something like that). What I heard was that all the legal Absinthe in America is just Thujone free, which makes it no fun. But you can easily order a bottle chocked full of the stuff on the incredible interwebs. Its not psychedelic on the lines of strong psychoactives but the real stuff apparently has a much different drunk than normal liquors. I had some (a lot) in Europe but was young and didn't have a whole lot of drunk experiences to compare it to. But I can tell you I had the time of my life that night and no beer drunk will ever come close to what the Green Fairy did to me :cheers2:
I didn't care for it. But I don't normally drink so the 120proof was crazy strong to me. And I don't like anise so the flavour was kind of revolting. It was a check-mark on the 'things to try' list and that's about it.
That is true, but from what I've read & seen most of the ones available here do include wormwood, just a certain amount (which I'll admit I can't remember atm) while the European versions have more (which I also can't remember) but yes, the Net is a great place to get absinthe, just be prepared to shell out a LOT of money...
I drank a boatload of this stuff on my 50th birthday in Rome Italy in 2004, but all I got was an alcohol high, and I was disappointed. But still a strong liquor, and an enjoyable drink.
