It's funny because when the NE was first hit by a cold snap a month ago, a big deal was made about it when it lasted only about a day or two... schools were closed, the news was talking about it incessantly, etc. Now we are in a period of prolonged cold and actually colder than it was in early January, and now it's like it's just typical winter weather, schools have decided to remain open, the news is barely talking about it, etc. It just seems silly.
yeah today was fuckin' brutal trying to ride my bike to work. the cold doesn't bother me much - i just dress for it. the wind is the real bitch. i had to get off and walk my bike this morning, and i wasn't even going up hill.
I disagree it's just not as cold We're expecting a low tonight of 11° F in the previous cold outbreak it was closer to -11° F :freezing: Hotwater
And i'm sure you were equipped with the latest studded bicycle tires to counteract the effects of snow and ice :2thumbsup: Hotwater
i have some decent tires, but they aren't studded. haven't slipped this winter at all (knock on wood) but i took a spill last february that tore a ligament in my thumb that i had to get surgery on. thing still hurts mildly. i've learned to be more careful...but shit, i didn't upgrade my tires since then :/
I hate the cold. Porkstock, everyone says "Dress for it"! I don't know how much warmer I can dress! And OP. Yea...the 1st major cold snap is more publicized. Now everyone is over it. Maybe SAD is setting in and no one gives a shit.
for biking, i really don't need to dress THAT heavy, because moving keeps me warm. i usually just have jeans (snowpants over those if it's really cold or windy), then a T-shit, light sweatshirt, nice winter jacket, hat and gloves, hood, and a facemask lately. if i was walking, i would wear long underwear, and a thicker sweatshirt, long sleeve T-shirt. you can wear a lot of layers. people pick on north face jackets, but it is a lot warmer than my columbia. a girl who works in the same lab as me, lives in the same complex as me. i catch rides with her sometime, but she likes to leave earlier than me, so i usually just prefer to ride my bike and be on my own schedule. i'm not above taking a ride though if you were to offer
I don't think that it's been colder here than it was a couple of weeks ago. There was also more snow, although there's still a lot. John and I were joking about how much we were looking forward to 20 degree weather, like that's warm.
same way the first time it snows each winter, 75% of drivers act like it's their first time driving a vehicle ever. subsequent snows, only about 25% of them continue to drive 0.75 mph every time there's a light dusting. that said, they closed school here for this one just as much as last one. i think the kids had maybe 3 or 4 days of school in all of january.
