Does anybody have any suggestions as to what I should wash my dreads with? This layer of dandruff on my scalp can't be good.. it's wiggin me out.. and I just showered so now it's twice as gross. Help, please?

man... I never managed to get completely rid of my dandruff when I had dreads. it sucked :( what are you using now? if the dandruf is in smaller patches on the scalp, try one or two drops of tea tree oil on your finger or a cotton q-tip, applying it on the patches. it soothes the itchiness and is antifungal... might help you out.

Yeah its just like everywhere at the roots I have patches of dandruff.. it's like wet sand. *shiver* I'll try the tea tree oil. My friend that has dreads told me to use dish soap because it has no oils or anything in it, but when I had dreads before it just dried my scalp out like crazy and made me want to scratch it all the time. Thank you. :]

This will be an unpopular suggestion.

For two short weeks, get a dandruff-medicine shampoo, like Head and Shoulders, or something stronger, and use it according to its directions.

yeah, you could do that too. might help. the really good stuff (medicated shampoo) is made with tar and smells weird, it's amber-coloured. it also has a talent for drying out hair, which is good for locking :) don't use dish soap. what a bizarre idea. all the nasty chemicals so close to your brain. although I could say the same thing about the tar shampoo.

T-gel is the shiz. Yeah it's got sls and other chemicals in it but I haven't found anything that treats dandruff nearly as well. Combined with a tea tree oil massaged into the scalp and my dandruff is under control!

try just washing with a natural, gentle soap every couple of days for a week or so, see if that helps the dandruff (mine goes away as soon as i wash). its probably just your scalp adjusting to a different routine, no need for medicated shampoo.
