I'll reply to your reply in order of what you wrote. To begin with, the online translators are not nearly proficient in doing a translation as it's a program that takes a phrase essentially literally and can't convey the true beauty of a fogeign language. No, upon coming into this forum, I didn't read "Interpreter's Club" anywhere. I did see a forum which allows people to interact. I wasn't aware of the mass amount of people flooding the forums asking for translations. I don't see the problem in asking how a native or fluent German speaker would say, "Long Live Socialism". It doesn't make me mentally retarded nor am I taking anyone for a ride. Does it offend you that I care about your German language? Would you prefer I half ass in making sure I understand your langauge, or just throw something together and call it German? I can't speak German at all, but I appreciate the language and culture immensely. In fact, I would have easily choosen a German coarse rather then a Spanish coarse at my highschool if I'd had the option. I was simply asking for some help for a project of mine. I am making a drawing which represents Socialism, and to represent my proudness of history, culture, and an idea, I want to write "Long Live Socialism" in German because Karl Marx help begin an idea that has sparked enthusiasm for a change. I understand your frustration, but what you expect and what I expect are different. I don't see it necessary to state where I'm from, who I am, etc...in such a formal style. I had a quick question and I see no connection between arrogance and what I wrote. I can't tell which is "correct", when I've came across. Lange leben Sozialismus Lang lebe der Sozialismus (these two translations from this forum) and finally, Langer lebender Sozialismus (from a translation website) When I read the translation website, I have a strong feeling it isn't correct as it looks like lebender is in it's infinitive form. In regards, I appreciate the help and don't want to make this a big deal, but I am replying to what you wrote Pit Schepatsche because I like to work things out for the better, not the bitter. Garrett
I would say, the translation "Lang lebe der Sozialismus!" is the correct one in your context. One word about the discussion here: We've had many guests here learing German and asking for our help in translations. Many of them just presented the German text and asked us to translate without trying on their own. Sometimes I wondered whether they really wanted help in learning or just getting their stuff done by someone else. And maybe that´s why it is now as it is. As you wrote, you do not even speak German. That´s a very different - and new! - case. And if you had written just a little bit about what you want to do (maybe that´s what Pit had been missing), there wouldn´t have been any problem at all.
Guten Morgen Peter, Wie geht es Ihnen? Mir geht's gut. That's essentially all the German I know. I purchased a book recently so I may begin to undertake learning German. Eventually I plan on taking it at the college once my schedule clears up this summer. I accept your apology and all is good. I actually live in a small town of about 25,000. Ich bin aus Kalispell, Montana. Ever heard of it? I understand what you mean about first impressions, and I agree how important they are. I understand where you are coming from and next time I will think twice before I just shoot the breeze. I saved the link you gave me, and found the phrase in there. This is a nice piece for me to keep handy, especially once I start trying to comprehend the language, the English with it is a nice bonus. A few reasons why I'm interested in German is because 1. My grandma came over from Germany in 1952 2. I have family connections to World War II (my great grandfather died near Moscow fighting the Russians) 3. I enjoy the sound and over all feel of German 4. The only foreign music I own is Rammstein, which is all their cds which I listen to (and try to sing to =P) as often as I can. Ever heard of them? I plan on frequenting these forums so I can learn and ask some questions as I'm sure I'll have some! Now that I finished highschool, I'm excited to take up my hobby as I have more time. Ha! I'd love to try out some other music acts for sure, but I'll never give up Rammstein...but I love the suggestions. I'm glad you brought this up, even if you bash one of my favorite bands. Just listening and reading the lyrics helps me a lot. A German foreign exchange student came here last summer and said the same thing. He says he thinks Rammstein is probably secretely racist. I'm not sure if that's true or not, but his guess is better then mine.
