please don't be mad i just wanted is the term gay used for male homosexuality or does it count for females too sorry its sounds silly but i just wondered
Gay can be used to describe both men and women. According to dictionary.com: "Gay - Of, relating to, or having a sexual orientation to persons of the same sex." Whatever you do, don't use gay as a noun. For instance, don't say "he's a gay" It isn't offensive but it's very lame
It's not silly. It's honest. Not all women agree what term they want other people to use. "Lesbian" is usually safe. If you don't know, ask. It's better to be safe than sorry.
@ henry101 wow i checked dictionary.com its true, that's why there is only a gay section here. "Whatever you do, don't use gay as a noun......." i am sure i would not do that @ SageDreamer Thanks for that i did feel frightened to ask (i did not want to offend anyone), though i felt its best to ask Thank you for answering your answers helped *hugs – and happy 2006*
. I posted some of this earlier. Back in the seventies I, and others, wrote the local news agencies and protested to have the terminology they used changed from the clinical (and base) term Homosexual, a term that inadequately defines my love, to the preferred term of the budding movement: Gay. Our efforts paid off. Homosexual is a clinical term. It describes a sex act. A sex act between two people (or animals) of the same gender. You can be Heterosexual and still have a Homosexual relationship or perform homosexual sex. Gay is a term that describes a sexual orientation, it informs you of who I am romantically attracted to. If you're describing sex, or sexual activity, Homosexual is a perfectly respectable word to use. If you're describing the commitment ceremony between myself and my future husband, please refer to it as a gay wedding. I'm not lesbian, so I can't speak for my gay sisters. Some believe that Lesbian is as clinical a word as Homosexual because it also has been used in medical text, and they agree that it inadequately describes their relationships. They may refer to themselves as dykes or gay women or Girlz. Others question whether the word Lesbian has a clinical sexual connotation at all, and are comforible identifying with Lesbian. The term originates from Sappho, the ancient, lyric poet of Lesbos who wrote beautiful love poems to women. .
