In a day of downer rockers like Linkin' Park, Evanescence, Staind, etc., we hear lots of songs that are sad and depressing.

Now, we have a band, A Perfect Circle, that took the greatest optimistic song ever written, and turned it into something of bitter pessimism.

I don't know who else on this forum has heard it, but I must say that I am very disgusted with it, and A Perfect Circle.

John Lennon tried to convey an everlonging optimism with 'Imagine', and now A Perfect Circle had turned that optimism into a 'Hey, I wish the world could be like this, but it won't so get over it' mentality.

Avoid that version of the song at all costs! Your optimism may just depend on it.

I really don't think I respect that Manyard guy anymore, if I ever did in the first place. Although Tool is a pretty cool band. But hey, maybe more young kids will hear it, and maybe they will then look into John Lennon.

GRARNG.... that makes me so angry. Leave John's stuff alone, especially Imagine, which was perfection when it was completed.

I really liked the cover. I think kids these days can relate to this "angry, depressing" music. Maynard was trying to make a statement when he compiled and covered these songs. He's trying to empower a generation that feels lost in society today. Check out the entire CD and the Imagine cover makes sense.

I think Maynard is an amazing artist...probably the most amazing singer in at least twenty years. Great set of pipes for a guy who looks like a deuchebag. LOL

I wrote about this when this song was released weeks ago. I think its funny that you people get all up in arms about it. Its just a damn song. And that is why I adore Maynard's version. He made it all his own, put his own spin on it, nothing like your regular cover. I actually like APC's cover of When the Levee Breaks even more on eMotive.

god, you people and your "preserve history" crap. Im glad someone had the balls to put their own spin on that song.

"hippies" are supposed to be more embracing, more openminded, but hell I dont see it at all. you all get upset over something that isnt all happy, optomistic or lovey dovey. get a grip.

A talentless band..... far from that Maynard has to be one of the most talented musicians out there today.... just becuase he does one bad cover of a song doesnt make him a talentless person, APC aint the best of Maynards work, but its still good, wish he was still doin Tool though, and for Simple Man being the worse cover, i didnt think it was too bad... but today on my way home from work, some shit punk band did the worse cover i have ever heard in my life, they did a cover of stairway to heaven, was the worst fuckin thing i ever heard in my lifetime.

PS: just a side not on "good" cover songs, check out Velvet Revolvers cover of Money, Slash's intro riff to that song is awesome

I enjoy this song. I like it when a cover is different from the original song. On the radio I heard that Maynard did the song how he thought John would sing it if he were still alive today; less optomistic.

First of all, stop with the anger. Second of all, aren't people allowed to have an opinion about anything?

Anyway, back to the subject at hand:

The song 'Imagine', even though just a song, is probably the best example of how good music could be, as a way to uplift you, and I think that A Perfect Circle has ruined that good feeling that came with 'Imagine'.

There should always be hope for a better world as explained in 'Imagine', but once again I say that A Perfect Circle has turned that hope into hateful desperation.

And as a reply to those that have called me a close-minded person. I generally am an open-minded person when it comes to many things; music in particular. But one thing that really gets my goat is these bands that convey a message of sadness, hatred, desperation, depression, extremely violent rebellion, rape, suicide, etc. I think that music in general should be something that should lift you up if you're not feeling good, and what these downer bands are doing is ruining music as a way to feel good.

Don't get me wrong, I think that A Perfect Circle have a good formula. They are a very mellow band, most of the time. I've also heard their cover of David Bowie's "Ashes To Ashes" that I really liked, but I think that their cover of 'Imagine' should've had a more positive attitude to it.

Even though, this could however be a sign of things to come.

I really liked the video to this cover, but I hated the way they played it. It took the feeling out of the song. The video made an eye-opening message, showing the wrongs of the world. But I will never-ever- put it above John Lennon's version. No one will ever exceed that beauty.

I just think that all classic rock songs should remain untouched... especially John Lennon songs.

Exactly, and another note is that I dont like bands that all of a sudden turn politcal. Their trying to make people think the "maynard" way, which is what a lot of Tool/APC fans get sucked into it would seem. In their compelxity they are annoying.

Besides that there are some songs you just dont touch. Such as Imagine, or Another Brick in the Walll ( Bad Korn Bad!).

    whine whine whine............

dont touch the classics blah blah.......

I hope yall know that John Lennon also touched classics and redid them too.... but when he did them, he did boring renditions of them, which hardly strayed from the true version...... at least some of these bands out here like a perfect circle and type o negative for example dont do these boring renditions of other people's songs.... they put their own spin on it. which makes it more artistic, and more of their own, even though it was written by someone else.

open your mind and your ears once in awhile.

and I think some of yall are trying too hard to fit into the stereotypical hippie cliche

I am going to have to disagree with this post.

I think a Perfect Circle was ALWAYS political. Take the song Judith from their first album as an example. "Fuck your God, your Lord, and your Christ/He did this/took all you had/left you this way/And still you pray"

    Religion. A very politicized issue.

Then take the song "The Outsider" from their second album. I mean, total stab at normalized society.

Maynard has always been very political...and has always been out to test limits and make "the man" angry.

I see your point, but i dont think it was ever so blatant as umm......well "Vote against Bush". Maybe he has touched on "issues" that saround America, but until now he hasn't taken a stand against a certain political person. I dunno maybe its the same thing, It just erkes me because some of my friends that listen to Tool/APC go way to far with it. They believe everything he says and will hardly listen to any other kind of music because it doesn't have "meaning". Or the "maynard" meaning........

Maybe they are just big fans, it's no big deal. I mean look at DeadHeads...I mean do you fault them for being big fans of the Dead? Probably not.
