I still find it hard to believe how angry people get when someone tells them they're a vegetarian or that they've adopted a vegetarian diet. Who cares? No one is forcing them to eat a certain way, right? If they didn't like brussel sprouts I wouldn't force that on them or try to make them feel bad for it. When I was eating vegetarian last year I got a lot of my family mad at me for it. Yeah I caved then, but now I've decided to go back to what I know will be best for me, I was just never a meat eater, even my mom says so. This time around I'm just not saying anything to anyone. It isn't their business anyhow. I'll just not take any meat at family events. Eventually they'll get the point. I just don't want them making a big deal of it again. My brother pulled out the complete protein thing, my dad was obsessed with me getting enough nutrients and my grandmother pretty much just didn't accept it to the point of arguing. I'm telling you my grandma put up an argument with me worse than what she gave my brother when he told her Christmas morning that he was an athiest. So not worth the energy.

    Good for you :)
I agree it is really bizzare that people get so hostile and defensive. My family were pretty suppourtive about me going vegetarian, but freaked out when I mention transitioning to veganism. So yeah I know what you mean. I know they'll come around eventually, it's just frustrating.

It is really strange to me too how people get angry.. its just like any other personal choice.. why do you have to do things their way? Weird.
Anyways if anyone gives you fuss, just tell them what you know: Two incomplete proteins make a complete protein, and its actually a myth that vegetarians don't get enough protein. They do because of eating incomplete proteins. Veggies have lots of vitamins and minerals.. if you're only eliminating meat then you're still going to have the other nutrients.

    Anyways, good luck!

Guys, I'm 40, and I still have people getting angry when they find out. I guess recently I've come to realize that it is quite common to see this. If you think about it, it should almost be the other way around...

Over the weekend, my wife told everyone she was going veg... and I'll never forget the comment that wen't along the lines of:

"your not helping anything... your just ruining your life... your making yourself suffer for no reason at all.. and in the end, you'll just be unhealty".

Lissy, just let it go... there is no rational way of explaing things to those stuck in thier ways... do it for yourself, and feel comfortable with your choice...

    peace

^ wow that was a real mean and iggnorant comment they said to yer wife! shesh! some people jus dont know a thang about it!

yeah some people get real offended by it....

i think its because when i tell them im a vegitarian, they beileve i am insulting them and think i am better than them and that they are gross because they eat animals..lol.

even tho i do think its gross, i dont judge people on their eating habits.
but people jus assume that , sometimes.

one time some guy asked me if i wanted a bite of his chicken....i said no thanks. he asked me why? i said because i dont eat. he said sort of sad, "oh...i guess i shudnt eat this in front of you then, i dont want to gross you out." but the thing is, i dont care! lol.

usually when people make weird comments to me, like "whaaaa? yer crazy!" i jus say simply " i jus think its gross.

or peopel say "pff what do u eat then? jus salad?"
ill say a stupid sarcastic remark back "actually i dont like salad at all."
or "jus cuz im a vegitiaran doesnt mean i jus only eat vegatables. i jus dont eat meat. im not a strict vegtable-tarian!"

anyways sorry u gotta deal with it..jus come up with some simple one liners :)

Yeah you just gotta brush it off if they won't care to understand..
I think maybe they feel defensive about it or something, I don't know. People get really angry when you bring it up sometimes for no reason at all. Maybe because they know what goes on in factory farms? I don't know..

exactly. a lot of vegetarians/vegans have gained a bad reputation by trying to impose their beliefs on others. so people get afraid you're going to lecture them about animal rights and hand them PETA pamphlets and stuff.
