I'm watching "Whalerider," which is about a girl born in a Maori tribe, and she is scorned by her grandfather, who wanted an heir who would be chief.

They make a big point of showing that she is barefoot ALL the time -- at school, riding a bike, at home, walking down the street... It's pretty cool.

The movie overall is pretty good, too. There's a lot of emotion and heritage in it, if not a lot of action. I think it won some sort of award at a film festival or something.

    Any of you seen it?

I like those movies where they have barefoot people goin around everywhere. What I dont like are these movies where these people from "civilization" come into villages and take members of their tribe. Then take them to civilization and teach them to be civilized instead of embracing their own culture. They impose our religion and values on them and dont give a rip about what the person themselves thinks or belives in. Then they usually go back and spread this around to eveyrone else and then theyre shnuckered into becoming like us and they end up losing their culture and what they are. I just hate how this country feels it needs to go everywhere and "save" people, especially when they dont need or ask for it. Some cultures dont want us comin in and imposing our nonsense on them.

I was referring to those type of movies where people from american go to these primitive cultures and slap some clothes on them and teach them to be ashamed of themselves and to act as immature as some of us do.

I saw it a year or two ago, not long after it first came out. I also got the DVD as a gift from someone. It is an excellent movie, probably one of the best I've ever seen that shows barefooting as just a normal, regular and accepted thing for people to do.

The girl who played the leading role was nominated for an Oscar that year for Best Actress, but didn't win.

I discovered that series when it appeared as reruns on TV Land. I was a little too young to appreciate it when it first aired, but I'll bet it was popular with guys wanting to see her barefoot each week!

Years later she acted in the movie "Smoky and the Bandit". Near the beginning of the movie, the Bandit who was played by Burt Reynolds, picked her up along the roadside while she was wearing a wedding dress. As the Bandit drove off, she took off her high heels, changed into her street clothes and ended up puting her barefeet up on the dashboard. Another nice close-up of her pretty bare soles!!!!

She should have won. That scene where she gives her tearful speech dedicated to her grandfather who chose not to attend... that was heartrending. Amazing little actress. She portrayed such power and ability, such a strong girl. It fits right in with the notion that she went everywhere barefoot! I think she didn't wear shoes for even a single scene in the entire movie! And others were shown barefoot lots, too, like at her school recital.

Overall it was a really good movie with a good message (although I'm still trying to sort out exactly what it was)... :p

OMG I guess I'll have to get that if they ever put the series on DVD!

Because, do you remember that scene in Smokey and the Bandit when she had her feet up on the dash, and another where her feet were up on the car seat like she was sitting inverted? She had really cute feet! :D

I watched Panic Room last night on TV and Jodie Foster and her daughter in the film were barefeet for most of the movie. There were some shots of Jodie Foster dirty soles as she was running through the house.

What really sucks is nowadays people dont even ride skateboards shirtless much, especially not at the skating places because they usually dont allow people to and claim its because of saftey reasons and such. Even outside though you dont see many people skating barefoot or shirtless like they used to. Now they wear all of that gay skating clothing and outfits.
