With a benevolance that should be reserved to the care of small children, there are those who would have their best intentions imposed upon others. They do not see the imposition of their best intentions upon others as a ursurpation of other people's best intentions for themselves; they see it as an alternative to chaos. The force of law should not be used to impose even a majority's best intentions upon others; it should only be used to punish and deter others from imposing a proscribed set of worst intentions upon others. Law should work to protect us from the worst intentions of others not our best intentions for ourselves. The greatest threat to life is the threat to liberty, and the greatest threat to liberty comes from those who would have their very best intentions for others imposed upon them. Progressives on the left and right, Islamists, socialists, fascists and communists are all possed of the same benevolant arrogance and the same desire to have their very best intentions imposed upon others. Of couse, there are those with less-than-best intentions for others. These covetous manipulate the envious into a dependent constituency, but even they are no match for the political might of the benevolently arrogant. If these well meaning voters would humble themselves, they could remain free; but if they do not, they will take their part in the dependent constituency. Unfortunately, there are now a majority of voters, in the US, who are either covetous, envious or unable to feel fulfilled unless they are telling other people what to do.
