i actually started by backcombing, but then left them alone after that. my friend just grabbed random chunks of my hair and backcombed. no grids or anything like that.

yeah, my roots ARE super tight, the ends are just completely loose undreaded hair. it's nuts, cause i hear that's sort of opposite to how they usually happen. they look a lot like regular hair in normal lighting because of it, but i like how at closer look, they reveal themselves to be dreads. i fall in love with them more every day.
haha, that's awesome. all i ever hear from people on these boards is, "how do i get my roots tighter?" blah blah blah... and i've had to do serious root ripping to keep my scalp from splitting!
