Yes it was half a century ago today that the late great Ken Kesey and The Merry Pranksters piled into their painted bus Furthur and embarked on their drug-fueled odyssey from California to the New York World's Fair and back. This historic trek and their subsequent acid tests probably did more than any other event to help ignite the 60's hippie counterculture. Whether you're a current or former hippie or you just like to get high you owe a lot to the Pranksters and the movement they kicked off!
My company is going to re-roof one of his offsprings roofs!! His son is a concert promoter here. As Zippy might say--"am I famous yet?"
I am reading the book now! I read an article about this and it claimed they be reliving the bus ride "without the LSD this time." Somehow, I don't believe that. 0 I wish they'd come here!
50 years ago i would have been 16 going on 17. but i lived up in the hills, and didn't know much about what was going on then, until at last half a decade later, finding out about it in retrospect. don't know if i ever read the book or not. but i do remember the whole earth catalog, and reading about them in there. i think i had both the last, and one of the ones before it. the one with divine right's trip in the sidebar. i hadn't tried any of the recreational substances until fairly late in the 70s, when it was almost all over. so i was alive at the time, but totally somewhere else and out of touch with it, when most of it was going on.
