I was discussing this on another forum. Pretty big debate. Is the answer 288 or 2? Please show you work, theories on what the answer might be.

I won't give my answer just yet but I will remind you guys that Multiplication does not precede Division. They are interchangeable.

    They are NOT interchageable.

    48÷2(9+3)

    is mathematically different than

    (48÷2)X(9+3)

It's math. It's not up for discussion. It's not like Republicans and Science.

    Facts are facts
    Math is Math
    Science is Science

the ambiguity is because of the lack of brackets and not knowing what to do with the 2. it can be used in both sums, so you add the bracket

    (48%2)(9+3)

    enjoy.

You know I don't think we ever used the division sign once I got into higher math classes. Everything was put into ratios. So this would probably be written 48/2(9+3) or (48)(2)/9+3 depending on which that you mean. That avoids all of the confusion as to which you mean. Then the rule would be to finish everything in the numerator and the denominator before dividing. I think that's right anyway. Calculus was a long time ago.

this is what google says when i put in 48÷2(9+3) or 48/2(9+3)
    (48 ÷ 2) * (9 + 3) = 288

    exactly what i got..

    parentheses first

right, but if parentheses go first, and multiplication goes before addition, then you would do the multiplication in the parentheses before the addition, so:

    2(9) + 2(3)= 18+6=24

    then 48/24=2

The sky is blue. Night is dark. Math is math. Fact is fact. And science is science.

    The answer is 2.

Lets start teaching religion in science class. The world is the topside of a turtle.
