    Imagine if somebody was to
    • Create a nano-scale 3D printer that could then create new parts for itself and replace the old parts.
    • Now, imagine such a device could be designed to obtain and breakdown commonly existing chemicals in the environment to create the materials it needs to create new parts; then discard the waste products
    • Then imagine that it could create other 3D printers that could do the same
It would be incredible, and it would also be the day that life on earth ends... scientists have even created a term for such a scenario

Once we are able to create something superior than ourselves, a machine capable of greater intelligence than us that could then design even more intelligent machines than itself.. idk but just think about how fast moore's law goes compared to biological evolution. Things could get crazy quickly and we cannot predict what things would be like after that point. The machines would be "plugged in" so to speak, having instant access to all the knowledge that exists in the world, so in a sense, they could all "know all that is known", and be able to jump past the usual learning curve so to speak in some ways.

You have to consider such technology developing at such a rapid rate could cause serious damage to the environment: And what I'm describing would end the world

Well, maybe damage from out perspective. The machines might change the planet into one big ball of metal and silicon embedded with tiny optical channels .. the earth's crust becomes one giant computational system ... which would probably suit them just fine as that would be the most natural environment for "lifeforms" such as intelligent machines.

What about all the creatures that would die?
