yes, it is good to put such arbitrary dates beyond our natural life times. long enough for them to have been forgotten by then. that is what all these recent predictions have failed to do and made themselves look rediculous by doing.

my only thought on 2099 is that by then we may be using a calendar that is less then a thousand years old, or one that is now already more then 5000.

i'm not sure which would make more sense, only that our current one doesn't.

The world will end when the sun dies. It is a star and will die. become a red dwarf and simply swell up. The heat will simply melt the earth like an ice cream and we will no longer exist in the year 9999 reoccuring.At 12am CET.
To be exact

 

actualy the planet will become uninhabitable somewhat sooner then the sun ceases to be a source of light and life on it. this is however, somewhat further away then a mere 10k of years. more likely three or four thimes the four or five billion years it's already been arround, or several hundred times as long as there's been anything we could identify as life on it. at any rate our own species will be in all likelyhood gone a rather long time before that, though still a good bit longer from now then a mere ten thousand.

that is of course, if we cease taking as active a direct roll in bringing about our own extinction as we currently, perhapse unintentionaly are.

nothing has to exist, and if we don't stop destroying everything, nothing, well nothing we can get our grubby little paws on, will.

but IF we survive what is entirely our own collective doing, we could well be arround for another few HUNDRED thousand years at least, if not several million.
