I'm almost finished with it. It's a great tale of a grim vision of the future. <---doublethink, sorry let me forget that.

I read 1984 in my senior year of high school - unfortunately, I didn't enjoy it as much as I should have because I was more worried about finishing the book than actually enjoying it. But after I finish reading "On the Road," I might re-read 1984.

I mostly enjoyed it, although I found some parts of it to be overdone and seemed to drag on and on. But I still think it's a good book.

    scarily prophetic in places....

telescreens (or whatever they're called) = CCTV

ministry of truth = public relations office (by government or public figures)
in england our governement has a "head of communications" and a "media relations" division....

Its one of the many books I keep meaning to read, but at the moment I've sadly not had much time for reading. Oh well, its almost the summer, and thats when I do most of my reading (prefer reading by natural light for one thing), so perhaps I'll keep my eye out for it next time I'm in a book shop.

A masterpiece. a reallly really powerfull book, that makes you think for years, if not the rest of your life. it also makes you realise that however shit it is, its not as bad as it could be, and no matter what its marginally better now.. we can still escape, we can run away, we might be chased, but at least we can run...

I 'm almost to part three right now. Don't give anything away right now. I still expect it to finish nicely.

the other book that is clasically recommended to readers of 1984 which is possibly a bit more fanciful but equally ascerbic:

Brave New World - Aldous Huxley

I was born in 1984, right in the middle of Britain's Thatcher years. The year of the Miner's Strike, and fascist oppression of the working class by a Big Brother state. There is much that is going on now that Orwell warned of. We must resist these influences with all our collective might. Bloody good book too....

I really want to read it, but there is only a simplified version of it in my town library and I want to read the proper thing.

Yesss, 1984 really is a masterpiece. Back in high school I wrote many essays that were based on it.

We cannot escape from the state, big brother does exist actually, and we let him govern us. it's our fault, we usually eat so much TV scum, that opressive state based on a conceptual future USSR is becoming real right here, right now, "globalization" (i don't know the proper word) is the same. We are all engaged.
IT's like the hate minute, have you realized that the system actually uses that way of washing our brain throughout TV?

This is a really, really powerful book... one of the best I've ever read, I'm only just at the beginning though, but I really like it so far...

Hmmmm, isn't it kind of ironic that it's based on communism, with the whole comrade thing, yet what it portrays is actually happening in the world's biggest capitalist countries, not the communist ones...

Why would anyone want to read the simplified version, my God, the book is so easy to understand, you could give it to a 6-year-old. Make sure you find the original!!! ;)
