18 Things you need to know about Las Vegas. (Author Unknown) 1. First, it is pronounced Loss Vay-gus. That is how we residents pronounce it. (Also! It is Nev-A-Da. Not Nev-aw-da!) 2. Forget the traffic rules you learned elsewhere. Las Vegas has it's own rules. They aren't written anywhere, just get in your car and hope you survive long enough to learn them. 3. ALL directions start with: "Go down I-95... Cuzz you don't want to get on I-15! 4. Las Vegas Blvd, Charleston Blvd, and Nellis Blvd have no beginning, and no end. 5. It's impossible to go "Around the block" and end up on the same street you started on. The Chamber Of Commerce calls this a "Scenic Drive". 6. The 8:00 am Rush hour is from 4:30am until 11:30am. The 5:00pm rush hour is from 11:30am until 10:15pm. Fridays rush hour starts on Thursday morning and ends sometime late Sunday night. 7. If you actually stop at a yellow light, you are NOT from Las Vegas. You may only apply your brakes at the end of a yellow and beginning of a red light. This is a Pumpkin orange hue. 8. For the most part, you can do anything you like, as long as it isn't in a "School Zone". 9. Just remember that Camino Al Norte is "Martin Luther king Blvd", Boulder highway is "Fremont St." Eastern Ave. is 25th St. OR "Civic Center Dr." Spring Mountain Rd/Sands Ave/Twain ave. are ALL the same road. Don't question the planning commision. You'll be convicted of state treason! 10. Henderson, is the only place on Earth where 3 parralell streets intersect at one traffic light. That would be where, Green Valley Pkwy/Eastern Ave/Maryland Pkwy intersect. Ask your old Geometry teacher to explain this one! 11. Rainbow Blvd has three exits from I-95. This makes giving directions to tourists more entertaining! There is also a "Lake Mead Blvd, and a Lake Mead Dr. Both run East to west about 30 miles apart You must be specific when you say... "The corner of Lake Mead and.....". Again, this is for Residents amusement! 12. Many major roads just end suddenly into someone's driveway, entrance to a Home Depot store, UNLV, a Casino or Mc Carran International airport. Just TRY to drive Harmon ave. from Rainbow Blvd, to Nellis! I dare you! 13. If the moisture at hand is determined to be rain, rather than sweat, ALL traffic must stop! Same for daylight savings time, women applying make-up, or a flat tire 3 lanes away from yours. Do not attempt to access any road in case of a cataclismic event such as Snow, Blowing dust, or a 3-day weekend! 14. Once a year, when it rains, "Las Vegas Wash" and the City of Las Vegas are the same thing! 15.The wind blows everyday here. It is impossible to live here without some type of allergy medication! 16. Construction on I-15 and I-95 is a way of life and a permanent form of entertainment. I-215 will never be finished, so live with it! 17. Stay away from the corner of Nellis Blvd, and Las Vegas Blvd, unless you want to be an "Extra" in the film: "TOP GUN". 18. And, yes. We all know that man in a Tiarra on Fremont Street. His name is Leslie and he probably makes more money than you do!
Hey Man, I Lived On Harmon Ave, 2000-2001 Loved The Place It took me about 2 phone calls to get a job and a place to live. Loved it hope to live there again. Would NEVER drive the interstate
Hey Matt, just got to pass on Kudos to your initial post on this thread. I have lived here in Vegas for 27 years now and I am laughing my ass off at the 18 things. There is so much truth to it all.
For YOU Zillagod, I'll add a NEW one that I myself grew up with. 19. ALL Male children who are age 12-18 MUST go down Bonanza Hill on either a Skateboard or a Bycycle at LEAST once! This is a right of male passage in this city, so. Live with it!
I used to party at the end of Bonanza Rd. when I was in high school back in the early 80's. Of course, this was long before the Mormon Temple was there and there were not any houses in the area. But if the hill you are talking about is the one in between Maryland and Bruce, well, I live right around the corner from that hill. I used to walk up and down it for exercise, and I have rode a bike down it many of times in my younger days until I got hit by a car coming out one of the side roads. I never rode a bike again after that. And guess what kind of car was driving that hit me---------YUP, you guessed it, it was a cab driver. Damn cabbies. Of course, my father was a cabbie in this town for ten years, LOL. There is a lot of stories there.
I once rode a bike from the top. (Maryland/Bruce) all the way to 28th street. Non-stop, coasting. Yes. It WAS a miracle I made it past eastern!
Well, I know that hill well since I live on Bruce 1 block from Bonanza. And I have lived at this location since 1987. Bonanza and Bruce is a good intersection for accidents as well because of that hill. People will drive down that hill doing 50 or more and then not be able to stop at the intersection in time. I see it happen all the time.
Well, Hiya Squawkers! Good to see you again m'lady! These posts have been what it's like to grow up in Vegas. I went to the Original, "Las Vegas High" on 7th street. Downtown. What was it Zilla? Ogden or so? We left campus to eat at the A&W accross from what is now and then the federal courthouse.
I just moved here at the beginning of august and had to pretty much throw everything I knew about traffic right out the window. I play poker at the bellagio every day for work so getting there is always a fun journey down the strip.
Actually, if I am not mistaken, it would be 7th and Carson. I remember going to that school twice, once for a free concert featuring Stryper, a religous rock and roll group(I still have the free bible they handed out), and once for a memorial for Clarence Piggott. He was the psychology teacher who was shot and killed by Patrick Lizotte at Valley High School. I went to Valley and was in the next room when this occured. Mr. Piggott was the main reason why I stayed in school. After he was shot, I dropped out. It was my senior year and I just did not want to be there anymore.
By the way, what is up with LV High School? I heard they were going to close it 20 years ago. I am wondering, is it still a high school. Wasnt their some talk of making it just some type of art school? Matt? Do you know?
Yeah. the original campus is NOW a Theater and Dance academy. (Private School) The New campus for "Las Vegas High" is on the EAST end of Sahara out near that Mormon cathedral. Close to the "B" on Sunrise mountain.
ain't that the TRUTH! it amazes me that those lights start flashing and people who DON'T pay attention to ANYTHING, pay attention to those ... god is truly out saving the children! and i would add ... 20. Those things with flashing lights that make a lot of noise ... those are ambulances! it is customary to pull to the RIGHT (not the left) and stop to allow them to pass ... Yes we have a lot of them and they may seem like just another part of the video game that is driving in Las Vegas, but someone's mother could be in the back of one of those! thanks for the too true but very funny laugh this evening!
First, I wanna welcome you to our forums! Good to have ya. An 'technically' you only have to pull to the right. The lawbook says nothing about stopping. But it's a good idea IF it's a cops lights. Anyway, I hope to see more of you.
hmmm .... don't have to stop for ambulances ... good to know ... different than texas and california (at least on the surface streets!) ... fortunately, haven't had an experience with one of las vegas (or n. las vegas) finest ... and don't plan on it ... glad to be here ... its so much easier than LA ...
