I'd go with a six pack of a really good selection of beers-from a beer store-not coors, bud, dos equis, corona etc.
Good beer styles to start out with are hefeweizen, amber, light fruity, and brown ale. All are great.

i'd say a six pack of blue moon may be just about perfect for someone unfamiliar with drinking. its cheaper than most higher end beers, but it's still quite good. it IS inferior to most of the better beers in the world, but its very affordable, very drinkable, and very common. it's far above the likes of budweiser and coors and such, but almost as affordable. there's a reason many people who don't know great beers very well (and some who do) consider it among their favorites, and it's certainly one of the best values around if you like a tastey beer. any liquor/beer store worth anything should have it, it's made by coors (though its not advertised as such, and with good reason)[IMG]

if you want something stronger, try some of the premade margarita mixes....all you need to do is put it in the blender with some ice and it's great. i like jose cuervo golden margaritas...certainly better margaritas can be made from recipes, but the bottled stuff is okay.

if money is no object, i'd recommend a bottle or two of chimay grande reserve....one of the best beers i've ever had...i've not had their other beers, but this stuff is tremendous.....i'd expect their others are also great, if not some of them even better. expect to pay about 10 bucks for a 750ml bottle though....but then again, it's 9% alcohol and you are a new drinker, so it should be enough to get you good and tipsy. heck, it does the trick for me most of the time
    [IMG]

theres also a canadian brewery called unibroue that makes great beer, i think pressed rat was the first person that told me about them. i've had a few of the beers they make (blanche de chambly, maudite, la fin du monde, and don de dieu, numbers one, four, five and six from left to right in the picture below) and i've been THOROUGHLY impressed by all of them. i'd say blanche de chambly or maudite may be your best bet for someone unnaccustomed to beer.

the unibroue beers are less expensive than chimay, which is imported all the way from belgium and is made exclusively by monks, and is one of a total of six beers in the world legally entitled to call itself a trappist ale. i think the unibroue lineup is great and can probably stand up alongside almost any european beers i've tried, it just seems to be less well known and less common...if you can find it though, i suggest trying them.

if you want to try some wine, beringer white merlot is affordable, perfectly palatable, and pretty common. you should be able to pick it up at the grocery store, providing they have a basic wine selection.

if you want to try liquor, i'd say my favorite is rum. i personally like the taste of captain morgan's private stock. if you find you can't handle straight liquor (most distilled spirits are usually 40-60% alcohol by volume) then you can always mix it. rum and coke is a beautiful thing. private stock is a little pricey compared to more common rums, but the phrase "you get what you pay for" is extremely true in the worlds of beer, wine, and spirits....this is decent quality, though it may not be up par with some of the coinnesseur's picks....

if you want it flavored, try bacardi coco mixed with coke. white rum is never good straight, though, it ought to be put in something. coconut rum is no exception.

finally, you've got liqueurs. liqueurs are made when distilled spirits are flavored with things like fruits, herbs, and spices, and they're usually sweetened and a bit more dilute than liquors. for a newby, something sweet and fruity like fruit shnapps would be a good bet. dont drink too much of it straight though, they're a little syrupy....best to drink mixed with something. juice, soda water, a girly blended drink maybe. i'm not a fan of these, but i understand why people like these liqueurs. they're very sweet and fruity, and cover the taste of alcohol well. but they're a bit sugary and fruity for my tastes.

personally i like jagermeister, which has an strong anise/licorice flavor and a rich dark color. it's got a lot of other stuff in there as well though, so dont expect it to just taste like licorice, its a bit more complex than that. some people don't like it, and i understand why, though i love it. if you get some and find you dont like the flavor, many people who neither typically like jagermeister or red bull love mixing the two together in a "jagerbomb." really, any carbonated energy drink is suitable for this. i prefer it straight though.

its only about 35% alcohol, but it still gets you drunk almost as easily as a strong liquor.

umm...so, these are just some ideas. really, no one can tell you what you'll like, its a matter of trial and error. you may not like the beers i suggested...most people do prefer the cheap, gross beers like budweiser (to me, theres nothing attractive about these beers except the price....they taste like shit...but if people like them, hell, i dont care)

in the end, just try whatever catches your eye and sounds interesting. everyone has different tastes...just cause i like some better beers doesnt mean i'm a coinnesseur of anything; pressed rat and some others certainly know more than i about beers, and in some areas i'm probably drinking inferior products (hell, i like margaritas that come already mixed!)

so dont take my, or anyone's, word for granted. you'll like what you like, and you may find that you dont like alcohol at all. go with your instincts.

I think some red wine on a first date is a little more romantic than beer and jager.

who said anything about first dates?

either way, i wholeheartedly disagree. it's all about quality, personal tastes, and the company you're keeping. i'd much rather split a big bottle of chimay with a beautiful woman while relaxing under the stars than, say, a big box of dirt cheap cabernet sauvignon........simply being "red wine" by no means suggest "quality" anymore than being "beer" implies a high quality product. most people drink nasty, cheap beer. most people likewise drink nasty, cheap wine. the selections of these products in places like groceries, drive throughs, and gas stations reflects the taste of the people. but just as there are great wines, there are great beers, even if most people are ignorant of the majority of them.

either way, i still think sharing some good beer with a lover would be much more enjoyable and, to me, romantic than some average wine.

good beer shares all the merits of good wine, and in my opinion it would take some fucking GOOD wine to choose that over a good beer. even the best wines i've tasted (which are admittedly few) simply pale in comparison to great beers in terms of taste and variety. i know there are some great wines out there, but its just a matter of quality, like i said.

certainly i would prefer a nice, drinkable wine to a cold six of PBR....

She said what would be a good drink for a first

I thought that meant first date, either that or means first sex. And by saying Red Wine why do you assume I meant cheap gas station wine? What the fuck. I was just suggesting a specefic type of alcoholic beverage not a specefic brand or even category such as merlot, zinfindel or cabernet. Do you really think I was suggesting get teh cheapest peice of crap wine and enjoy? Thanks a lot

I would rather have a great beer with my spouse, which is at least much cheaper, than a great bottle of wine. I am finding that $40 is about as low as I wanna go for a still, red wine, so far. And really, red wine is a bit cliche and definately not that sexy, or romantic if you don't like it, which I personally find, most people *don't*.
And since "date" or the F-bomb aren't mentioned in the post, it's hard to assume that that's what was meant by "first".

exactly. you can only go by what they said....they seem to have no clue what they like (judging from the post) and it has generally been treated, up until now, as having meant first drink. basically, and introduction to the world of enjoying alcoholic beverages.

perhaps someone needs to read more than the first and last posts of a thread before responding....
