Yes there will be drawbacks to all of them but I think it would be interesting to see lots of ideas on how to help save the planet. 1. Rich governments of the world should buy up rain forests from the likes of Brazil and Indonesia and protect them from illegal and excessive logging.
I can't directly help what "rich governments" do. So unless this thread is about what each of us can ACTUALLY do to help, it's not going to mean anything.... For example... -Switch all of your lightbulbs to florescents. We've already done that.
indeed, this ought to be a laundry list of things that each of us can do, instead of what someone else ought to do. - actively compost & recycle as much as you can - buy in bulk, and buy local (to reduce pollution from long transport) for everything from food to housewares to clothing - support products that are Fair Trade, not tested on animals, biodegradable - grow as much food as you can, and don't use pesticides, or else use greener pesticides - when going on vacation, pick 'green' vacations (do a google search for eco vacations, there are a laundry list of them) - buy organic everything, buy what you can that's already been recycled - reduce your ecological footprint by buying only what you NEED vs everything you WANT - when giving gifts for xmas, birthdays, etc make it a point to look for eco alternatives for gift giving - buy handmade instead of machine made items when possible (machines=pollution) - invest in shower heads that reduce the amount of water used; low flow toilets; anything that saves water - walk, carpool, and take public transit whenever possible - may seem gross, but as far as your toilet is concerned, 'if its yellow, let it mellow, if its brown, flush it down' -> saves water consumption - bring your own bags and boxes to the grocery store to reduce the amount of paper/plastic used to package groceries
There is only one true way to save the plant... no matter what you say... Here it is: Kill all humans.
from an engineering perspective the question is very simple and has four simple parts. the only real complication and difficulty is the political opposition to them of major economic interests. and whatever we do individualy, and yes there are SOME things that we can directly, but indirectly, the incentives created by the things that we don't usually think about in the ways we live our lives, this is where the most good can be done. economic interests depend upon the markets that are created for them, and it is the priorities we live by without thinking about them that create those markets. now back to the four simple and obvious things: stop using combustion in any form to propell transportation. stop using combustion in any form to generate electrical energy reduce all human firtility accross the board by 80% (untill human population falls below 1750 levels then readjust to stabilize at that level) (anti-viagra in the drinking water, george martin's manna, et c.) and of course the use of a MUCH greater percentage of NON-forrest products in new construction. (NO use of wood as 'disposable' dunnage for example, 100% recycling of all deconstruction, remodel rather then tear down and rebuild to the absolutely as much as possible, that sort of thing) really the only incentives against doing what needs to be are political/idiological and economic. and the tecnological methods neccessary to still have infrastructure that will still give us as much or nearly as much comfort zone as we are familiar with are not pie in the sky future tec, but proven over decades, in some cases centuries and even millinea, so the only reason we are so often told it can't be done, or how dificult it would be, are again those vested economic interests. of course it can't be done stupidly and work. what we've got now is the resault of putting economic interests first and blinding ourselves to everything else. that does get back to one of the things we can do individually as well, and that is to NOT put economic concerns first in our own individual lives either. i don't mean most of us are in a possition to entirely throw them out with the bath water, but we do need, all of us, to start waking up and realizing what is important, and what is at stake that makes it so. my favorite alternatives to the use of combustion for anything other then home heating and cooking i've enumerated elsewhere, repeatedly. this is almost like my favorite one note samba. but i guarantee you it is perfectly and completely real. many of my prefered dreams and approaches are by no means the only alternatives possible; and indeed it is an intigration of a diversity of approaches, having of neccessity in common only their harmonious compatability with nature's cycles of renewal, upon which, we, like all life, of which we too are a part, utterly depend. =^^= .../\...
I suspect that the planet will save itself in due time by eliminating the infestation that troubles it. Unfortunately that is a human infestation.
Attacking other humans wont change anything. Coming up with solutions is the only answer. We should be realistic.
kinda crazy, we are the problem... but yet we can not come up with a sulution... animals may not be as intelligent, but at least they know not to kill off their food supply and polute the water. Maybe we should revert back to a simpler time... huts and loin cloths...
The planet is already doing a lot to destroy this silly virus we are a part of. Disease, natural disasters, etc, etc... I honestly believe that we will do that job for the planet ourselves... one day some idiot will push that big red button... which will lead to a lot of other big red button pushing... and so on. That day I will laugh like hell.
The most important things we can do are to explore ways to meet our needs more effieciently. I used to steal cable. Problem solved. *claps hands*
Whatever, like- the key thing to do is seriously just to try to be mindful within your means but... It's probably fucked anyways and it is kinda funny in that kinda way.
