I'm writing something that involves a female going to Berkeley in 1967. I'm short on detail - how would she get into the place to do a first degree? What qualifications would she have to have? Would she have to be going to a high schin California to get in there? When she was there would she have lived in halls of residence (as we call them in Britain) or could she have lived in the town? How long was the degree course (three years in Britain)? Any other info you could let me have (presumably boomers would know most) would be welcome. In the end, and if it ever emerges, I'll credit you in the book.
Cal Berkeley as part of the University of California system began requiring that all applicants take the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) in the early ‘60s … not sure of the year, but certainly before 1963.
Normally a U.S. high diploma or its international equivalent was required, but passing the GED (General Education Development) test was sufficient as was a couple of years as a functioning adult.
Halls of residence are dormitories in the U.S. and are referred to as dorms. She could have lived in an on campus dorm or off campus in private accommodations. Some schools require dorm residency during the first year and a very few for all four undergraduate years. Cal had no such requirement.
The normal degree program takes four years, easily shortened to 3 1/2 years by taking summer classes. Also may be shortened by receiving academic credit for classes taken at other schools (in or out of the U.S.) and credit for life experience.
