Well with the amount of plastic shit I have been picking up over the last few years on my tiny patch of beach near my house I am not at all surprised by this report. I have been wondering how long it will be before every major body of water in the world turns into plastic stew. After only 30 years or so we have managed to produce not one or two, but five separate huge garbage patches swirling around the oceans. One for every ocean in the world, given our continued acceleration of plastic use and irresponsible disposal habits I would imagine that within a hundred more years they will begin to collide with each other. When this happens the game will be up and the world population will be in real trouble as this is only one of the environmental problems we continue to ignore. This is not bullshit and any one who thinks it is only has to visit your local body of water be it an ocean, or lake, river, creek, or stream and LOOK at all the plastic debris on the waterlines to know that we are fucked unless our habits change very quickly. Of course while big industry continues to watch the money roll in nothing will change while the majority of people continue to sleep or simply deny that anything is wrong. Just about every time I go to the beach and clean I am thank full that I never reproduced because we will never change and the future is bleak indeed.

The problem is also the mindset that all of life is as disposable; of acting like punks running down the alley kicking over trashcans for fun, feeling no responsibility, nor having any accountability. There is a large very large chunk of the population who are nothing more than spoiled children.

" while the majority of people continue to sleep or simply deny that anything is wrong"
I would equate this with your "spoiled children" analogy... and I would largely blame the media and entertainment corporations along with industry for causing a large portion of these "spoiled children". (and I'm not talking about children, exclusively here.) They are getting brain dead because they never get to use their brain. It's all rolled into one big mess.

As if the fact that we are all on a terminal ride is not enough.
I don't think dreaming about the earth's potential demise is very wakeful.

James Cameron, director of movies like “Titanic” and “Avatar,” is making another big venture though this time it’s not in the big screen. Together with Google executives Larry Page and Eric Schmidt, they formed the fledgling space exploration company called Planetary Resources. The company aims to develop systems and technologies to support an inexpensive commercial robot-inspired exploration of the solar system. Through it, Earth’s resource base will be expanded while giving a new meaning to natural resources and forming a new industry.
