SXSW Homeless Makes You Feel At Home
Like this post? Yes | No

SXSW promoters are having 11 homeless people act as WiFi HotSpots.. Basically strapping routers to their body and walk around the festival area..

Quote:
SXSW, the annual gathering of tech, film and music creative leaders in the country, is up in a tizzy over homeless folks. No, the people at SXSW are not in an uproar over the fact that people are homeless. The latest hot topic of criticism is that a New York-based marketing firm, BBH, is running a project called Homeless Hotspots. Homeless Hotspots employs thirteen members of Austin's homeless community to provide mobile 4G connectivity for SXSW attendees in return for donations.

Soo weird. I don't know how I feel about this. Isn't there a better way to help them out?

On the Daily Show last night Jon Stewart mentioned they were only paid $20 dollars to do this. They aren't paid hourly and I'm assuming they're doing it for the duration of the festival and not just one day, although I could be wrong, which would make the one-time $20 payment vastly under minimum wage.

But you have to PAY to use the wifi, and the homeless people collected the payment from concertgoers.

I say why not? Do they have something better to do with their time?

i am sympathetic to the plight of the homeless..i give them cash and drugs if i can....but i do not like talking to them or even being near them...they almost always smell and look awful...i imagine body lice jumping from the homeless onto me as i walk by...and how long before the mexicans start pretending to be homeless to get the cushy homeless gigs>..

Take the 20 bucks
Take the money the people paid to use the wifi
Take the router and sell it later.

People are made homeless bums by circumstances in an unjust society of exploitation. Their addictions and conditions are nothing more than the symptoms of the greed of the ruling elite class. A class that will stoop to any low in order to strip away all that one man has for their own selfish temporary pleasures.
