Women are infinitely threatened by attractive men, or any man who has reason not to put them on a pedestal or think of them as the prize in a relationship, or suck up to them (the physically powerful, the unusually capable, smart, virile, etc).
Insta-cling effect, or alternately, they may fuck them and do everything they can to mess up the relationship rather than not be able to control the guy. Most attractive guys are good dads, and yet that is not enough for women. Attractive guys are not good dads to them, and therein lies the problem.
Most of them feel they are better off with doormats, and who could blame them? Hot guys are super-charged TNT to their fragile little worlds.
Not to mention the fact that men and women define friendship very very differently. The rare women who are capable of friendship, however, may be rarer and more useful to choice men than his male buddies, though.
Finally, it is just a waste. Evolution labors, lays waste and sacrifices generations upon generations of uggos so that two rare, well-formed attractive organisms may finally, with tremendous luck, encounter each other for a fragile, fleeting moment and they are not going to fuck in the name of potato love?

Edit: Unless, like VG says, they prefer each other in which case, good for them. Truly attractive people should serve only themselves and their peers anyway, evolution is beneath them. Evolution works for them, and not the other way around (and they know --- no, feel-- it).
