Occupy Philly Facing Eviction TODAY

Occupy Philly has announced they are facing imminent eviction:

[Mayor] Nutter has joined the chorus of Mayors nationwide to silence and render invisible this movement against Wall Street greed. The City told us to leave City Hall with all of our belongings by 5pm today. At 5pm let's show them how much support this movement has. Come to City Hall and stand with the 99%! Chances are police will not move in at that time. The City will probably unleash them in the middle of the night to start ripping down tents and displacing the homeless.

about 1000 people left and the police presences has risen but still no eviction... i haven't been out there in a bit but i noticed they have not been cleaning after themselves as much. half of the people who are left are pretty smart, good atmosphere in general. i am not into the occupy really but i do support the efforts. also, there are news vans and trucks all around 24/7 so if something does happen it will end up being televised. mayor nutter stated some time nack that anyone has the right to be photographing/filming the police as oppose to other places where the police are telling media they will have their press pass taken away or that they will be arrested if they do not stop. ii just want to see what happens ha.

Occupy Philly Protesters Begin March After Police Raid Encampment

Quote:
Police began pulling down tents at about 1:20 a.m. Wednesday after telling demonstrators they had to leave. A group of protesters who left Dilworth Plaza began roving through downtown, their march coming to an end with arrests around 5 a.m.

About two dozen protesters were lined up in cuffs and being loaded on to buses by officers who penned in the march near 15th and Spring Garden streets.

"The police officers who were involved in this operation were hand-picked for this assignment," Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter said. "They're highly trained and disciplined and showed a tremendous amount of restraint and professionalism in carrying out this morning's operation."

I think it's really saying something when you have to "hand pick" officers who will show "a tremendous amount of restraint and professionalism".

I saw this sad news on the Philly news this week. They showed how few people are occupying the "new" plot of ground that was "graciously" granted to them (of course no sleeping allowed). It was really sad. There were maybe 10 people. I hope the movement picks back up this coming week.

I may even pay a visit to the site sometime near Christmas if I can muster up the willpower to drive the daunting and dangerous roads from my apartment to Philly. I know an Amtrak runs there too but it is very expensive unfortunately. I really want to get down there at least one day and give encouragement.

Most of the events will center on Independence National Historical Park, in the city's historic district, an area widely known as the cradle of liberty — home to Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell and the place where the Declaration of Independence was first read aloud and the U.S. Constitution was adopted.

About 1,500 people are expected, with some coming in caravans from all over the country, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Atlanta, Miami and Chicago.
