I hate to disappoint you Sam, but sometimes you're nice anyway, in spite of your best efforts not to (online, at least). Some part of your brain still knows that not everyone is out to get you.

You guys are both sweet, in completely different ways. You are exceptional. As long as there are a few left, the world still has a shred of hope.

Quite true, but it was still very different then. People in "polite society" would stab you in the back but act nice in front of you and other witnesses. There were limits to the nastiness. I think I liked that better.

Boring? You and I are using completely different definitions of the word "nice". Have you read any of my other posts? I'm not nice in the boring way.

Earlier this week, somebody behind me laid on the horn apparently because I was driving too slow to suit them, even though we were coming up on a traffic jam and there was nowhere to go. I checked the mirror, and it was a little old grandmother type with white hair! I gave her the finger, and I don't regret it. The old bitch earned it. Ten years ago, I would have bet you $1000 that I would never live to see that situation take place. I never thought about giving my grandmother the finger, but she never acted like a jackass behind the wheel.

Most mean people deserve a "grace period". Were you continue being kind to them (for a short time) even if their being jerks. Most start acting nice because their used to getting the attitude in return instead of niceness. At least that's what I found.

The social milieu of any scene is directly dependent upon the drugs in use.
Back when ppl smoked pot, everyone was cool, or seemed that way.
Then LSD got ppl into a LOVE vibe.
Then coke got ppl into the party scene, then the strung out scene.
Then meth got ppl into the fuck everyone scene.
Then crack got ppl into the shoot everyone scene.
Then E got ppl into the club scene, like a combo of the disco era and coke mixed with LSD...
Then ppl got into the get rich buy stock buy mcmansion scene and it was greed city.
Then ppl got laid off, foreclosed and forgotten by a self-serving government that forgot who pays its wages.
So yeah you can see how ppls mindsets might've changed over the years culminating in what you see now.
Hope turned to Greed turned to Addiction turned to Endless Wars turned to Hope again,
and now with ALL HOPE GONE, what is there left to be nice about?

I'm a nice person, and by that I mean that I don't take pleasure in hurting others or making them feel bad, and I enjoy helping people when I can, and if people think I'm weak or something like that for being helpful or kind....then so be it.
Common courtesy is almost dead as far as I'm concerned, sometimes I think I'm the only one on Earth who practices it.
Sometimes people think I'm mean or conceded because I can be a bit of a smartass at times, but that's just my personality and sooner or later they come to realize that I'm far from either

I'm nice in person and most people are nice to me. I can get mean when I have to, but I'm real nice in general.
People have definitely got a lot more comfortable being rude, but I don't think it's on that large of a scale, at least not around here.
Except on the road. Drivers have become maniacs.

I have lived in a lot of different neighborhoods and environments in my life. For more years than not I have been a distinct minority, and in more ways than one. To be perfectly honest, as far as I can tell, the great majority of folks are good, nice, family people. But, there's always been a few "bad apples" out there, for a variety of reasons. Unfortunately, these days there are more people than ever and more reasons to embrace hate and anger than ever. Therefore, I believe we are witnessing an era of more "bad apples" than ever. Nonetheless, I still believe that the great majority are fundamentally good-natured and good-hearted.

a kid (maybe 14 or 15) actually held the coffee shop door for me today instead of hurrying up to keep up with his buddy (I walk slow)
there is still hope
