Hmm, well first of all you need to give it a real effort. You're body's telling you to move, but you gotta tell yourself to sit still or there isn't going to be a meditation. And yes, everybody who comes to meditation almost inevitably faces this issue (with the thinking).

You don't go straight to focusing on nothing -- you start by focusing on the breath. Only focus on your breath. IF you want, write it on a paper, tape it to a wall, and read it whenever you feel the urge to get up or lose your focus. Make it say, Sit down, you are meditating, follow the breath. Or get a timer and tell yourself you aren't done til it dings. You gotta make this a real practice, it deserves time just like whatever you want to run off and do.

Whenever you notice you are not following your breath, just return back to it. It's not a problem if you lose yourself thinking, just when you notice, go back to the breath. This is why that paper constantly reminding you what you need to do will help. Paper never forgets.

I agree, however I would suggest trying meditation whilst laying down. Unless you're prone to fall asleep.

Another option is that if the mind does want to wander then give it something to do. Move it into the physical body and do vinyasas or a movement meditation. One method is mantra repitition (bee-breath, AUM, Gayatri mantra) By using your voice you bring yourself into a physical realm and when you exercise this aspect you will get a more relaxed period after it.

An even more physical method is to breath in and rotate your hands and feet opening the chest and pelvis; breath out and close the chest and pelvis (you are in corpse or savasana doing this).

Getting more physical undertake a sequence of yoga and then attempt the meditation when your physical body is fully in balance.

Meditation and Shaktipaatham (Power Transmission) are only easy if you approach a SadGuru not some ordinary Yoga Guru. Again the word SadGuru is very unique (search in wikipedia)..they are not ordinary Guru's. Guru's..like Yoga Guru's might be in thousands but a SadGuru is very rare to find.

Shaktipaatham (Power Transmission) by SadGuru Sri Ramanananda Maharshi is an excellent way to learn meditation. It also helps in other ways which are listed below.

You may experience some of the following through power transmission
• Peace of mind.
• The body becomes light and cools down.
• Sharpening of mind & faculties and increasing of physical stamina.
• Ecstasy of Meditation.
• Some of the body pains and chronic diseases get cured or are reduced to a great extent.
• The clashes of thoughts in mind and their negative effects on the body get reduced or disappeared to a great extent.
• 98% of the participants get divine vision & great feelings.
• Great vibrations.

I personally took this Shaktipaatham (Power Transmission) and learnt Meditation technique through Maharshi. I had several great experiences and am proceeding towards my goal.

Sri Ramanananda Maharshi is visiting USA in August 2010 to provide Power Transmission. Please contact me for more details about his visit.

If you feel the need to get up and do something, just be with this feeling of urgency, soak it with attention. In fact, a wandering wind can be a gateway into meditation if you just listen to it in the same way, for example, a parent would listen to his child.
