I might be wrong.
but I think this is the french version of a common latin saying.
"Mus uni non fidit antro"
the latin goes along the lines of "a mouse does not rely on just one hole"
while this french phrase is literally "a mouse lives in more than one hole"
I'm thinking they are meaning the same.
the context of this phrase might help as far as its meaning goes.
generally this phrase would be taken to mean that you shouldn't leave yourself only one option or 'out'. but yeah, hope this helps.
