solar panelled satellites

We have the technology to send into orbit satellites that, when reaching outer space would open solar panelled wings a mile long and send the energy they gather back to earth by harmless microwave. This would solve our energy problems forever. The Russians were planning this in the 80s before the USSR collapsed. Why won't America do it? Because the oil barrens don't want it.
Which is also why the media ignores it. This technology is of vital importance and the people need to start a movement demanding it.

There are a variety of problems with trying to do this. It is not the easy fix that it seems, unfortunately. There are much more economical and much easier ways to meet our energy needs here on Earth without needing to burn fossil fuels.
