Im a person who likes my music live local affordable and dancable. I like to pay $0-$20 be in bycle/public transport distance. That and the fact that i dont get out much seriously limits the bands I see but I love the good ones.

In Palatine Durty Nellies has a phat soundstage and occasionally really good artists. I have seen Gaelic Storm there as well as lots of my local friends and faves, even their open mic (Lamplighters too) turns out some carfty homegrowns.
In Dekalb The House Cafe, Otto's, and Independant Rock Barn dekalb actually has a badass music scene check out this obscure little batch of homegrown dekalb kids their wicked like an acid frenzy
