Visual Hallucinations - What do you see at night?
Like this post? Yes | No

From time to time i notice that when i begin staring at certain spots in my room, the room will begin to brighten in a certain way. It looks as if, with the lights off, the room is fuzzy and vibrating with a white glow. Also when this starts happening i begin to see vivid hallucinations such as spiraling circles, evil faces, and the appearance of eyes. It only happens at night and i experience no audio or visual hallucinations during the day, nor any audio hallucinations at night. It's just visual. The shadows in the room begin to change and grow. If i stare at a point long enough my vision begins to enter a "tunnel" and it is as if waves of energy are rushing across my vision (outside to inside). The colors red, purple, and black make up this tunnel. It never fully makes a tunnel it just rushes,in fades away, and rushes back. These waves are intense and make my head throb. Also the hallination begins with me seeing a red object constantly spinning in the middle of my vision. It appears to be in the shape of a squiggly, then takes the form of a circle. It seems the harder i concentrate on this thing the clearer the object gets. I am not scared of any of this because i feel like there is nothing to be afraid of. I know it is a hallucination, but i am trying to find answers to this situation. Any input on what you believe is happening to me would be great, becuase as it is when i talk to people about this they think i am crazy but i don't go thru a day without thinking about it. Thank you. Anyone else with weird experiences feel free to post.

i used to sleep with all of the lighs off and in the quiet darkness...until i started seeing worms crawling under my skin and cockroaches dancing in my hair. i started scratching my skin and scalp to make it stop. this happened for a coulple of nights. (i have NEVER done drugs IN MY LIFE by the way.) i think it was stress because my father was in the hospital, but now i sleep with my tv on always.
it really scared me. i thought it was real, but when i figured out i was hallucinating, i was still scared that i was losing my mind.

Strange you mention this - I was doing the same thing the other night - the reason for this is two main reasons - because your brain is trying to compensate for the lack of light by filling in the blanks it keeps adjusting the way you see the world - dont forget the eyes only recieve the light its your brain that sees it!
The other thing is that you are more receptive to light under dark conditions and are able to see more subtle variations in light such as if you stare long enouh at a small glowing light (a pinprick of light) you will see within the darkness very subtle shades of extremely dark blue light

I agree with the above post. It happens to me too, it almost seems like your seeing... let's say, a ghost. Not that I really believe ghosts visually appear, but it is a trick of the mind.

Yeah I know what you mean. Ive been doing those sorts of experiments from a young age too. Actually a lot of creative people (painters usually) use these sorts of things to see - I mean REALLY see what colours the world is really made up of. For example many painters have noticed that a shaddow is not black or grey - it is actually a dark form of the opposite colour to the object casting the shaddow and at the edge of a shaddow is a band of colour that is complementary to the objects colours - Although some colourists still wonder if there is more to that. Once you get into colour theory and notice effects for yourself and try to document them - they become even more fascinating Everything written about in this thread is related to the Purkinje effect

you obviously enjoy visualising the world - seeing with your eyes what is really there - its no magic or ghosts its the way the world really is to human eyes if you look at it closely enough - Its what colour theorists do - also the pattern known as paisley was invented by similar means -
Isaac Newton was interested in colours and perceptions on the eye

One suggestion I have is that you get paintshop pro and try to emulate in colour what you see in darkness- that process is fascinating and produces art you didnt previously think yourself capable of - abstract or otherwise

Josı opens the chapter with a brief discussion of what Van Gogh once said about shaddows, and discusses how artists currently view shaddows as blue; whereas, at one time, they were viewed as similiar to Van Dyck brown, or burnt umber. He explains how the post-impressionists dicovered that the basic color of shaddows is blue, and he devotes an entire lesson to actualy showing us how that is so. Next, he devotes a second lesson to understanding the local color in darker tones, which he also points out is somewhat reminescent of an old master's painting. In the first lesson, he gives us a sample still life painting, all in shades of blue. In the second lesson, we see the same still life painting, where the shaddows are not made with blue, but only by using darker tones of the local colors. The third lesson deals with the complementary color of the local color. Here, we are given a third example of the still life, painted this time in complementary colors, which are used as shaddows. Josı also points out that the still life now looks very much like the style of some paintings by Toulouse-Lautrec, Cızanne, and especially Van Gogh, with the contrast orginating from the juxtapositon of the most opposed colors, of highest contrast. He is not advising us to paint like this, only to help us understand. The fourth lesson in the chapter deals with the finished painting. We now see the same still life painted correctly, with proper use three types of colors in the shaddows: blue, the local color in darker tones, and the complementary of the local color. As Josı carefullly guides our eye through each step of the proccess, we now really understand what he wants us to see!
Obviously the best artists themselves have taken hundreds of years to agree on the correct formula that makes up a shaddow - what you have been seeing in the dark is what artists choose to look for too

me too dude. i dont get all those waves and stuff anyways this is what i do. i try to concentrate on a spot. (with the light on). like on the wall or something, and i do so untill its like im looking through a wall of light. everything else goes white and i can still see part of the wall. and if i am really carefull i swear i can see atoms or electrons or something flying around. and i smoked weed the other day and started seeing peoples auras, but that went away quick. i love these kinds of power's some people have. do you guys know of any other stuff you can do with your mind. oooh. like telekinesis. i would really like to know if anyone is for positive that its real. thats all i need and i know i could figure out how to do it.

I just thought most people had this kind of stuff happen in their visual fields... seems a lot do anyway.
