The Poetry of Hafiz

OMG! This stuff blows my mind!
Here:
"WHY JUST ASK THE DONKEY
Why
Just ask the donkey in me
To speak to the donkey in you,
When I have so many other beautiful animals
And brilliant coloured birds inside
That are all longing to say something wonderful
And exciting to your heart?
Let's open all the locked doors upon our eyes
That keep us from knowing the Intelligence
That begets love
And a more lively and satisfying conversation
With a Friend.
Let's turn loose our golden falcons
So that they can meet in the sky
Where our spirits belong-
Necking like two
Hot kids.
Let's hold hands and get drunk near the sun
And sing sweet songs to God
Until He joins us with a few notes
From His own sublime lute and drum.
If you have a better idea
Of how to pass a lonely night
After your glands may have performed
All their little magic
Then speak up sweethearts, speak up,
For Hafiz and all the world will listen.
Why just bring your donkey to me
Asking for stale hay
And a boring conference with the idiot
In regards to this precious matter-
Such a precious matter as love,
When I have so many other divine animals
And brilliant coloured birds inside
That are all longing
To so sweetly
Greet
You!"

Thank you for sharing so much beauty G! There is truly a Christian heart in you...
All the things you write (and the way you do) seem to come from the higher... mastermind. So, many thanks for cooperating and getting the job done (guidance)
♥ Much Love ♥

Ahh Anima
What a truly islamic heart you have to so appreciate the poetry of Hafiz.
Course then some don't see the need to talk about the religions of the world - so corrupt are they from whence they originated.
Sometimes we must go to Intent - and the Blessing to the giver is allways in the giving - for to give from a whole heart is such a blessing to the one giving ,
Blessings along the Way - Ahh the lessons we learn !

You're so right! The Intent and the Intent of Love is what counts for everything there is, IS Love.
Sufi mystic poetry is so full of grace and wonder though, so many truths in it... understanding that it's the Heart that speaks through words. Christian exponentials have been many too, like Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz and San Juan de la Cruz (St John of the Cross) with his Dark Night Of The Soul. All of this reminds me of Loreena McKennit's "The Mask and The Mirror"... an enigmatic album, full of mysticism. I'll upload it in my site so you can all enjoy her music and celestial voice...
In one of her journals in that album she says: November 26, 1993. Idries Shah on Rumi: "The union of the mind and intuition which brings about Illumination, and the development which the Sufis seek, is based upon Love..."
Then, it's all about Love...
Hafiz of Shiraz (1230-91) the greatest lyric poet of Persia, who took the poetic form of the ghazal to unparalleled heights of subtlety and beauty.
Another three poems I'd like to share...
~*~
Mortal never won to view thee,
Yet a thousand lovers woo thee;
Not a nightingale but knows
In the rose-bud sleeps the rose.
Love is where the glory falls
Of thy face: on convent walls
Or on tavern floors the same
Unextinguishable flame.
Where the turban'd anchorite
Chanteth Allah day and night,
Church-bells ring the call to prayer,
And the Cross of Christ is there.
Hafiz - "Persian Poems"
~*~
The sun
Won a beauty contest and became a jewel
Set upon God’s right hand.
The earth agreed to be a toe ring on the
Beloved’s foot
And has never regretted its decision.
The mountains got tired
Of sitting amongst a sleeping audience
And are now stretching their arms
Toward the Roof.
The clouds gave my soul an idea
So I pawned my gills
And rose like a winged diamond
Ever trying to be near
More love, more love
Like you.
The Mountain got tired of sitting
Amongst a snoring crowd inside of me
And rose like a rip sun
Into my eye.
My soul gave my heart a brilliant idea
So Hafiz is rising like a
Winged diamond.
Hafiz - “The Gift”
~*~
We are the guardians of His Beauty
We are the protectors
Of the Sun.
There is only one reason
We have followed God into this world:
To encourage laughter, freedom, dance
And love.
Let a noble cry inside of you speak to me
Saying,
"Hafiz,
Don't just sit there on the moon tonight
Doing nothing -
Help unfurl my heart into the Friend's Mind,
Help, Old Man, to heal my wounded wings!"
We are the companions of His Beauty
We are the guardians
Of Truth.
Every man, plant and creature in Existence,
Every woman, child, vein and note
Is a servant of our Beloved -
A harbinger of joy,
The harbinger of
Light.
Hafiz - "The Subject Tonight is Love"
Love and Bright blessings

wow, what beautiful poetry thank you both for sharing
i was really confused after reading the poem though with how it was associated with Christianity. seems nothing Christian about it so much as just pure love and hope for connection. that seems to be a common thread in every single theology there is.

I like this one esp. after all that wine we've partook of this last week MArie, and yeah, go figure we must share a brain, heehee. i am so glad it is such an interesting one!
Quote:
Next spring, giving up wine, I deny
Why fool myself? This I’ll never try.
Where is the minstrel, that all piety and mind
With the song of the harp and reed I defy.
In the noisy school, O heavy heart, O heavy heart
In the service of wine and love let sometime go by
Where is the fairness of life, bring me wine
I’ll tell the tale of many kings who now peacefully lie.
On Judgement Day, openly I show how I erred
Honest mistakes fear not, His mercy shall multiply.
Bring the messenger of dawn, distant midnight cry
With that majestic morning light will dissolve and fly.
This borrowed life, given to Hafiz to live and die
Will return to its owner, when His face identify.

My Sweet, Crushed Angel
You have not danced so badly, my dear,
Trying to hold hands with the Beautiful One.
You have waltzed with great style,
My sweet, crushed angel,
To have ever neared God's heart at all.
Our Partner is notoriously difficult to follow,
And even His best musicians are not always easy
To hear.
So what if the music has stopped for a while.
So what
If the price of admission to the Divine
Is out of reach tonight.
So what, my dear,
If you do not have the ante to gamble for Real Love.
The mind and the body are famous
For holding the heart ransom,
But Hafiz knows the Beloved's eternal habits.
Have patience,
For He will not be able to resist your longing
For Long.
You have not danced so badly, my dear,
Trying to kiss the Beautiful One.
You have actually waltzed with tremendous style,
O my sweet,
O my sweet crushed angel.
~~* Hafiz
Such beautiful souls, each and every one of you.

Mystics all - gazing on this reality and Seeing what most do not. Having no recourse but to Live our life driven - or submit to the perils of forgetfulness of Self as have so many toiling here.
The experiences garnerd by the work in this land of separatness and becoming are the stuff from which miracles happen and Change occurs - We Become yet More - move into the Beyond - but to Do so each must maintain the Awareness of the Connection - that we are Spirit and united as a Whole - so do we Learn and Grow.
And Love is the glue that Connects us.
