A question for those from New York City

I'm from Upstate- near New Paltz, about an hour and a half north of the city- and the school I go to is doing this "do your own thing" trip to New York city. Fifteen bucks for a bus ride from here to Central Park, and back. 6 hours in the city doing whatever you want. Not a bad deal.
Anyway, I was thinking that instead of staying in Manhattan, I would take the subway to Brooklyn. My thing is that I've been to Manhatten many times, I've seen all that I'm really interested in seeing there, and I've never been to Brooklyn. I was thinking of going to Prospect Park or the Brooklyn Museum or something.
But I was wondering, about how long a subway ride is it from Central Park to Brooklyn? Since I've never been to Brooklyn, as far as I know, it could be five minutes or an hour. And what trains would I take? The subway system in New York is wonderful once you've figured out the map. But by the time I figure out that map, it'll be time to go home.
Also, are there any other places in Brooklyn that I should check out?
