A question for those from New York City
Like this post? Yes | No

I'm from Upstate- near New Paltz, about an hour and a half north of the city- and the school I go to is doing this "do your own thing" trip to New York city. Fifteen bucks for a bus ride from here to Central Park, and back. 6 hours in the city doing whatever you want. Not a bad deal.

Anyway, I was thinking that instead of staying in Manhattan, I would take the subway to Brooklyn. My thing is that I've been to Manhatten many times, I've seen all that I'm really interested in seeing there, and I've never been to Brooklyn. I was thinking of going to Prospect Park or the Brooklyn Museum or something.

But I was wondering, about how long a subway ride is it from Central Park to Brooklyn? Since I've never been to Brooklyn, as far as I know, it could be five minutes or an hour. And what trains would I take? The subway system in New York is wonderful once you've figured out the map. But by the time I figure out that map, it'll be time to go home.

Also, are there any other places in Brooklyn that I should check out?

Its gotta be at least 20 minutes from Central Park to Prospect Park in Brooklyn.
I would take one of the B, Q, 2, or 3 trains. Check out the map at http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/nyct/maps/submap.htm If you look at it for a few minutes it will make more sense...

depends where you'd like to go. i imagine you're starting from the port authority? brooklyn is pretty vast. williamsburg is pretty funky (sorry i'm ignoring you're ideas of where to go - i don't know where brooklyn museum is) and it's real real close to the city. you'd get to 14th st and then transfer to the L train and take it into williamsburg. lots of nice shops and restaurants. prospect park, in park slope, is a bit further. it's really nice though, and park slope in general is quite pretty. 6 hours would be a fine amount of time to get your ass to the slope, walk around, grab food, hang out, and get back into manhattan. dont' remember the subway you'd take though. i'm pretty sure it's the F.

I left NYC in 1985. I never lived in Brooklyn, but I was raised in the Bronx and went to college in Flushing, Queens. There's the Bronx Botanical Gardens, Poe Cottage, and the Bronx Zoo. As far as Queens goes there's Flushing Meadow Park. Sorry... I've never been a big fan of anything exciting in Queens.

Let us know how your trip goes/went.
