my g/f has a canker/cold sore in the back of her mouth that has been bothering her recently. I've heard that this is the same virus as herpes. yesterday she went down on me, and now im wondering if i might get genital herpes from contact with the sore in her mouth. i can't find anything about this on the web. does anyone know anything about this?

It is possible.
A cold sore infection is highly contagious, and intimate physical contact should be avoided when a cold sore is present. This is especially true for oral sexual contact: a cold sore infection CAN be passed to the genitals of another person. This type of infection would be referred to as genital herpes, though it would be caused by HSV 1 instead of the more common HSV 2. To avoid spreading HSV 1 to someone's genitals, do not perform oral sex if you are having a cold sore outbreak.

Is it a cold sore or an ulcer? They are two different things. Please, never have oral sex with someone who has open wounds/sores on their mouth. Come on, have some sense.

I dont think you can get the mouth herpes on your genitals, but if she has genital herpes in her mouth, which is possible, then itspossible that you might be at risk of getting it too. Chances are its nothing, but if you have any symptoms, check it out

canker (sp?) sores and cold sores are two different things. as someone said before, canker sores are usually just from a cut, or biting your cheek, or from whatever else, and they're in the mouth. i'm pretty sure you can't catch anything from canker sores. it's the big fat cold sores on the outside of your mouth, that you need to worry about.

ok, listen:
1) canker sores/mouth ulcers are benign. they are small lesions INSIDE the mouth either on the inside of the cheeks or on the gums. they are generally no bigger than a couple millimeters in diameter. they appear white while they are healing and they tend to hurt a bit for up to a couple weeks. canker sores are caused by numerous factors such as stress, diet, or subtle changes in hormones. these happen to most people but these types of sores are not contagious and do not contain any herpes virus whatsoever. you may receive head without worry.
2) cold sores are malicious. these are caused by the herpes virus, which can transfer from mouth to genitals and vice versa. they are highly contagious and usually appear in outbreaks that last at least a month or so. cold sores generally appear on the OUTSIDE of the mouth on the lips, but they can potentially appear anywhere else on the body, i believe. these sores are large (up to 0.5 inches or so) blistering wounds that may ooze with fluid. receiving head under this condition should instill great worry and/or panic.
from what you are describing, this girl probably has canker sores, thus you should not have anything to be concerned about--it probably looks like this:

peace.
