I've experienced that jerking/startled awake due to the falling sensation - which has been my experience with hypnic jerk. This is very similar, except that it's not the experience of falling, but instead an electric (and startlingly loud) jolt sound and the painless, but disturbing feeling, as the OP described, of that jolt moving through your head.

Imagine you're wearing a non-padded, tight fitting helmet with a powerful vibrator attached to it and some one flips it on for an instant, and that's kind of the sensation I'm describing. The accompanying noise is like a sudden and loud electric buzz/arc. For me it happened in an instant, then it was over and it was as if nothing happened at all - no residual feeling or effects - aside from the fact that it scared the crap out of me, every time it happened and I was really worried for a time that it was some kind of early symptom of schizophrenia. So far (knock on wood) that has proven not be the case, and like I said, it (the head jolts) subsided.

Okay, this is about the same as the SSRI/SNRI withdrawal symptom then and not a Hypnic jerk..... Does it get more prevalent if you turn your head quickly?

I don't know if it's the same thing, but I've had some weird stuff happen while dozing off after tripping. (probably still tripping somewhat).

Very much like the jamgrassphan's description, but without any lead up. Just a sudden, electrical sensation and sound which scares me and jolts me awake. It's almost too loud, and it does not seem to come from the ears hearing something, but from electrical activity in the brain. Like something shorting out.

It was especially scary the first few times, and I thought it might be a seizure. Now it's not usually as scary. One time about 6mos ago, it seemed to continue after I woke up for a second, which was really scary because I was consciously experiencing it. Usually it is gone soon enough that I don't have time to worry about it until after. I can't imagine if it didn't stop within a few seconds...if it lasted for a minute or something I would be very confused and scared.

It seems related to having my mind being stimulated from the trip, but I'm extremely tired and dozing off before my mind is ready to sleep. So, it seems like somehow the transition to sleep causes it.

It may have happened once or twice when I wasn't tripping, but I can't completely remember.

(I haven't noticed it not happening with LSD, and that's where most of my experience lies, so I'm 99% sure it has happened to me on LSD and probably mushrooms too. I think maybe on 4-aco-dmt pretty recently.)

(I searched around a little, and it seems pretty common. Searching for Brain shock lsd or brain zap lsd finds a lot of info. Also Exploding Head Syndrome seems almost right on with my symptoms on wikipedia, but there's no mention of serotonin in that article. Searching for Exploding head syndrome lsd gets a lot of results.)

nice info ! maybe its like leg jolts .. when your muscles are stressed they zap out the un-needed energy to help you fall asleep.. only with your brain or w.e .. once it happened to me for a minute it was scary as fuck .. it might just be a symptom of anxiety as well ..but if three of us all had it and we aren't schizo, dead , or brain damaged i think its all good .. i had a m.r.i of my brain recently due to anxiety attacks and nothing is wrong with it that docters can see..maybe that will calm you down about it ... to me it always felt like burning bridges that wern't suppose to be connected ..undoing w.e the drug did ... it just sucks cause you feel it , hear it and see it but its painless...

Would you say the feeling could also be described as something that's pushing against the inside of your brain? Like.. fairly hard. If so, I got that on LSA - not painful but very weird, if not then never mind :P
