Small Occupy encampments are popping up in major cities throughout the world. Nrc.next provides an overview. One thousand Occupy-ers in New York, 70 in Sydney, a few hundred in Amsterdam. Meanwhile the Occupy-ers are becoming organised, the camp on Amsterdam’s Beursplein is fast becoming a small village with a kitchen, media centre and first aid post. The paper interviews 23-year-old Niek, who gave up his job to join the protest. Unable to find affordable accommodation in the capital and after six months sleeping on friends’ sofas, he decided the only solution was to become a squatter - and squatting became an illegal offence a year ago. His motto is “We are the 99 percent, Occupy everything”.
