Homemade hot pepper/garlic sprays will make the leaves unpalatable.
When I used to grow way way out in the canyons around SoCal, occasionally I would find a green grasshopper silently munching away on my plants.
The single one I'd sometimes find didn't due much damage, and they are beautiful.
A vibrant almost iridescent emerald green, I didn't have the heart to kill 'em.
But I didn't want them eating my plants either.
So I started carrying along an empty coffee can with holes punched in the lid. I'd capture the 'hopper in the can and let him go about a mile down the trail on my way out.

What a rightous thing to do ranger,I think you would of gone about it in another way if there had been a infestation.

Had there been an infestation I would have whipped up a batch of my homemade chili/garlic spray.
That doesn't kill them, it just makes the leaves unpalatable; they look elsewhere.
