i know some about them, but i want to know more. like why they made up the party? or why their motto was: rise up and abandon the creeping meatball.

it was started on new years eve of 67. by abbie hoffman, jerry rubin, and paul krassner (all wrote good books, read them). they were looking for a way to unite the hippie culture with the political movement. they needed a name and paul krassner came up with yippie. as a spoof on hippie. a little later that night (technically the next day and year) they made it stand for youth international party (YIP). it really worked because they were doing a youth revolution, an international revolution, and were having a party doing it (abbie hoffman made everything funny as well as serious). they mainly were formed for the chicago democratic convention in 1968. this led to the chicago 8 conspiracy trial. you can google this to find out information about it.
i don't know where you ever heard that motto. i've never seen it anywhere and have been through loads of yippie stuff. there is a yippie proverb that goes "free speech is the right to yell 'theater' in a crowded fire." again this is abbie being serious and funny at the same time.

oh, no definately not all nonsense. it was just a group of fun loving hippies who wanted the war to end and for the government to not be screwed up.
