Teacher Nabbed In Pot Raid
The woman and her husband, a county agency director, had marijuana in their home, police say.
A Gloucester County fourth grade teacher and her county employee husband were charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana after police raided their Saints Lane home.
Charged are Roberta Shifflett, 45, and her husband, Michael Shifflett, 57, the longtime director of Gloucester's Department of Housing.
Their son, Joseph Shifflett, 18, and a houseguest, Sarah Ouelette, 19, of Gloucester, are charged with possession of marijuana with the intent to sell it.
Another houseguest, Matthew Carter, 19, of Gloucester, is charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession.
Charges are pending against a 17-year-old Gloucester female who was also in the house at the time, Chief Shefiff's Deputy Mike Nicely said Tuesday.
Nicely said the raid was conducted Thursday with a searchwarrant by the Middle Peninsula Drug Task Force and county deputies.
The raiding party seized about a quarter-pound of marijuana, a set of digital scalesl, and $663 in cash, he said.
Roberta Shifflett has been a teacher in the county schools about 23 years.
She was teaching fourth grade at Bethel Elementary School.
Bethal Principal Brenda Martin praised Shifflett as an excellent who was "very caring and loved her students very much."
Martin said Shifflett was on indefinate leave.
Michael Shifflett has been suspended, County Administrator William H. Whitley said, "until the case is decided in court."
As the county's housing director for more than 23 years, Shifflett administered a federal rental assistance program for Gloucester and other Middle Peninsula counties.
The Shiffletts couldn't be reached for comment.
