Guard your daughters before Bush gives them the Draft:
http://www.congress.org/congressorg/issues/alert/?alertid=5834001&content_dir=ua_congressorg
Congress brought twin bills, S. 89 and HR 163 forward this year, http://www.hslda.org/legislation/na...s89/default.asp entitled the Universal National Service Act of 2003, "to provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons [age 18--26] in the United States, including women, perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes." These active bills currently sit in the committee on armed services.
Dodging the draft will be more difficult than those from the Vietnam era.
College and Canada will not be options. In December 2001, Canada and the U.S. signed a "smart border declaration," which could be used to keep would-be draft dodgers in. Signed by Canada's minister of foreign affairs, John Manley, and U.S. Homeland Security director, Tom Ridge, the declaration involves a 30-point plan which implements, among other things, a "pre-clearance agreement" of people entering and departing each country. Reforms aimed at making the draft more equitable along gender and class lines also eliminates higher education as a shelter. Underclassmen would only be able to postpone service until the end of their current semester. Seniors would have until the end of the academic year.

No, Canada signed an agreement not to harbor draft dodgers. They'll be checking your ID at the border. Of course if you want to sneak into Canada and work off the Canadian books, I guess that would be ok.
Luckily for me, if I ever got drafted the army could put me to much better use behind a computer screen than on the battlefield, so I wouldn't have to worry about combat.

My biggest issue with being drafted comes from seeing how America treats its veterans.

if you get pregnant.. they won't draft you. of course, that's not a good reason to have a child, but just a thought.
also, religious reasons won't work anymore. which is dumb. if you don't believe in the war (or any wars) why do they want you? i would think you'd be less help than all those eager to murder.

I'm for the draft. If someone is willing to live in and love the country, then that very someone should be willing to defend her as well!

I'm for the draft. If someone is willing to live in and love the country, then that very someone should be willing to defend her as well!
But there is a difference between defending the COUNTRY, and defending the country's political or financial interests. WW2 was the last war fought against forces that posed a direct threat to the COUNTRY. In the event of a war to defend the COUNTRY, you wouldn't NEED a draft, as there would likely be more volunteers than the armed forces would be able to use.
Every war the US has fought since has been in defense of political ideology or financial interests. In the case of Bush's crusade in Iraq, it is being fought to line the pockets of defense contractors and oil companies. Iraq posed no threat to the US, and drafting people of either gender to kill or die defending the profits of US corporations is about the worst form of slavery there could be. Fortunately, as the latest war for capitalism grinds on, more and more people are figuring out what's up, and recruitment into the military is hitting bottom FAST. If the corporatocracy wants a steady stream of cannonfodder, a draft is going to be the only way to get it. And instututing a draft might be enough to wake up the critical mass of people to put an end to not only the current war, but the corporate system that PRODUCES these wars.

Christ, at least you guys can use pregnancy as an excuse....
So what do we (both men and women) have as an option instead of draft, which is obviously coming? I see there is mexico and pregnancy(for women). There's "canada", where we can get in illegally. (far easier than mexico, imho) So what else is there?

HIPPIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!What type of person signs up to a hippie board filled with mostly liberals and purposely gets on their nerves? Don't you have anything better to do?
Personally the only soil I'll protect is my home as a poster stated in a similar thread.
I was born into this country, it's not like I came here by choice, so why do I have to defend it?
But it will be fucking priceless to watch the "feminists" suddenly go, "But--we're women. We can't fight in a war."
That will be so fucking funny. Hypocrites.

Yes, I like that idea of "Why should we defend this country? It wasn't our choice to live here." As decent as our country could be seen, there are better ones out there. I would move if I could... But anyways, I still would never want to risk my neck for this country. Not even worth it. Instead of drafting civilians, the government needs to draft politicians to fight! Especially the fat, rich, Republican politicians! (though I'm not sure they would do a good job of fighting. ah well, it's a good way to purge the system...)

If you have religious convictions they can put you in a non-combat area, which could mean a lot of places and possibly even a domestic job.

I don't think that anyone is trying to argue that "equal rights" includes drafting as well.
I think that the bigger issue is...why are we fighting a war that we would have to draft for. Obviously if the war was being supported by its citizens than we wouldn't need to draft. So why is America going to war without the support of its citizens?
I can understand if our land was under attack, but it shouldn't be necessary to have a draft at all as long as the country is doing the will of the people.

That's a good point Strawberry Fields. It would be possible with a very small shift in foreign policy. Men should not be called up to serve unless they are really defending the Country and not just catering to Bush's Corporate Agenda. There are alternatives to OIL. I am sorry to say this, but there is no honor in dying for Halliburton.

i personally see nothing wrong with the military or mandatory military service myself, if in fact our country was in the position that mandated mandatory military service....however i think that it is bullshit that mandatory service will be reinstated for a bullshit cause likie the one that we are currently facing....we are not fighting for america, we are fighting in order to spread our will to the rest of the world, we are implementing communist like tactics to spread our will to other countries that don't agree with our views, and in the eyes of many what we are doing is right, not out of knowledgde however, but out of patriotism....since 9-11, the gov's war on terror has been sooooo exploited and exagerrated that the leaders in washington have capitalized on the mass paranoia throughout the free world in order to spread their capitalistic ideas on the rest of the world to ensure better trade issues of all types throughout the world, making it more profitable to corporate america, because in a free capitalistic world corporations can send jobs overseas to a cheaper labor market, in turn ship products here and sell them for full price without the worries of insurance costs and environmental concerns, which is exactly what GW has done......sorry to get off topic, but you see where i'm going with this...bottom line, i will serve my country, but i will not serve the corporations that run my country
